My guess- and it is just that- a guess, is that this is St. George before the 1946 fire. I can see in the right the bridge of a ferry (with the name showing!). I know there was a ferry from Tottenville- but this just isn't Tottenville, but is close to a dock area. Hence= St. George :)But clearly, it's not today's terminal, which is underneath the bus ramps, and looks "underground"... (like Lenox/148th...) So Main says "St. George, before the 1946 fire!". But Main, like his namesake neighborhood, is always willing to change. So anyone who can prove me wrong- that's fine too. But to me, it's pre-fire St. George 'till proven otherwise. |

The Tottenville station of today is quite different, but still right at the water, but St George isn't quite that close to the water. I rode the ferry on its last day of operation, a Sunday, back in the early 60's. The boat was basically in the same location as in this shot. I recall being amazed at how close the train was to the water. The ferry went to Perth or South Amboy; I can't recall. I do recall getting there and finding absolutely nothing, except a grocery store, which came in handy. Also there would be a train yard off to the left.My memory, my opinion. Good picture, nevertheless. |

Ok, I took a look at other pics on nycsubway.org of Tottenville from way back when. MAYBE it is Tottenville after all..The Ferry (to Perth Amboy) is in the right place for it to be. But those tracks are built on a pier over the water. Today- and for at least the past 50+ years (look at the pics from 1964..) the Tottenville station is on land. So if that's Tottenville, some MAJOR landfilling operation took place there since the photo was taken. That's why I like St. George better- the whole place was reconstructed after the fire. |

In looking at the photo a second time that looks like a ferry on the right side. There was a Carteret ferry decades ago, I have never seen a photo of the SIRT North Shore lines terminal but it could be that terminal. In addition, Tottenville has a center platform for two tracks on the right side. The platform on the left could have been removed but I have never heard mention of there ever being one. Also in Tottenville to the right of the tracks is Ellis Street which ran along the entire route of the train from Arthur Kill Road to the waterfront where a large restaurant has been located. The water could never have come that close to the tracks. |

Amboy; discontinued about 1962-63. The platform on the extreme right "disappeared" a long time back, and only the pilings remained.I believe in the 80's the whole station was redone. |

Ellis Street only extends to the east end of the station. Much of the station's length is directly on the water.This could not be the terminal of the North Shore line, which not only was significantly inland, but was not a "terminal" in that the tracks continued (and continue to this day!) over a bridge into New Jersey. The Carteret Ferry did not connect to the SIRT as it was at the foot of Victory Boulevard. Elizabeth is where the SIRT North Shore Line extends to. |

The ferry is the PERTH AMBOY which ran from 1907 to 1948. I'm going to stick my neck out and say that this was the original station with two side platforms. There was a major fire at Tottenville in 1927 that destroyed several of the brand new MU cars and probably most of the wooden station and platforms.
