Long shot on top of a long shot. I would like to see Central Terminal restored, but how much would it cost, while it's in that condition? On top of that, restoring the bridge connecting the tracks, ugh... |

Probably a better chance of Metra rebuilding Chicago Dearborn. Or Amtrak moving out of Rensselaer and rebuilding Albany Union Station. |

I wish the USAF would drop a bomb at the hunk of shit of a Buffalo Central terminal, pay NYS-DOT reparation aid, and invest the money in the Depew station which is just fine. It is a safe suburban neighborhood. It's also in ahitty area, with no local bus service, and no intercity bus service. Nobody will leave their car there overnight. I used the Terninal in the late 1970's getting to college. It was an above ground sewer then - it is 1945-Berlin today. |

Buffalo Central Terminal was a mistake from the moment it was built. I get that a lot of terminals were built in areas that at the time were far outside the currently developed area, but did people really believe Buffalo was going to develop that far out? This station is wildly inconvenient to a downtown that will never spread as far out as Broadway-Fillmore. One of the key advantages to the train over the plane is that it brings you right to downtown. This mistake of a station, as beautiful and historic as it is, makes taking the train as convenient as flying, and by that I mean not convenient at all. Depew is even worse. At best, I could see a station right there at the junction just off Exit 5 where at least all 3 services (Maple Leaf, Empire, and LSL) could stop close to downtown, but even that is a bit outside, but at least it's an area where one could reasonably expect downtown to expand to if Buffalo were to ever bounce back. |

I don't think it is that important to be in downtown when we are talking about Buffalo. Look at the rider states, and Exchange St is not that popular compared to Depew. AT least at Exchaneg STreet, you can walk to the Light Rail and NFTA bus terminal, which is not something you want to do when several of the trains pass through Buffalo anyway.Depew is fine. It is a nice suburban area 2 miles form the airport and car rentals. The Maple Leaf is not that important anymore compared to a NFL terminating train. Customs behavior and procedures have killed most of the business. Look at the VIA Rail annual report. It carries on average 43 people per trip, is the worst performing route in the system, and has a subsidy per passenger mile of $4.02. Even the poor performing Quebec remote trains of 1 coach each perform at a $2.53 subsidy per passenger mile. |

There are 4 things which conspire to hurt the Maple Leaf:1. 2 hour customs stop formerly at the converted freight house - the new station is nicer so this might not be so bad. 2. The high fare. 3. The long ride - if we get the 3rd track this won't be so bad. 4. Bad times for Buffalonians who would want to day trip Toronto. |

Exchange Street with 3 trains a day is about the same as Saratoga with 2 trains a day. Croton-Harmon is 45,000 per day. It is pretty clear people do not want to go downtown. |

You also have to get off with your luggage and not get back on until they are all done, both directions, which is done at the VIA Rail station coming back.4. Nobody from Buffalo is going to sweat out that Customs shit even with better times. Canadians opt for the GO Transit bus/train combo. That's why VIA dropped their own frequency. Maybe some Buffalonians drive there too to catch GO. |

You're better off finding out what the real reason is than assuming it's because people don't want to go downtown. Is downtown Buffalo a depressed area? Is it gentrifying? Do the type of people who are more likely to ride Amtrak live in the suburbs more-so than downtown? And you're definitely better off not assuming that people will never want to go downtown. Millennials for the most part are urban-centric and are leading the resurgence of the city center all over the country. So if the future Amtrak demographic is moving downtown, then expect Exchange St ridership to change. |

I'm not even considering Buffalo to Toronto riders. I'm just looking at it as one more train providing service from Buffalo to other points in NYS. And being in downtown is most definitely important since that's where millenialls are moving to. Besides, you were arguing for Central Terminal, which is in a shit suburb not near anything. |

Why? Why spend the money to build a light rail to support a station just because it's a nice looking historic building when a station could be built downtown. I get the desire to serve Central Terminal, but guess what, it's in a shit location and it's useless as a result. |

I think it's simply because most Buffalonians own cars, would rather store them at the (free!, safe) parking at Depew, and take advantage of the additional train (LSL) whose evening run is at a far more convenient arrival time from NYC than any of the other trains. A trip to NYC has the maximum time available by taking 280 down and 49 up. There's also a healthy crowd getting *on* 49 at Buffalo to go west. All of these problems are solved via the Buffalo Central Terminal plan. The developer wants to build it into shopping space; a shopping mall with garage that also allows train riders to park (with access to all 4 round trips) is a slam dunk. |

The Lake Shore can't go downtown, and that is the heaviest loading train of the 4.Central Terminal doesn't solve anything. It is still several miles from downtown, in a shitty area, passengers aren't going shopping, and 4 round trip trains a day with 400 people on & off per day isn't going to have any economic impact on the neighborhood. If they want to build a shopping mall, there is not a valid excuse to drag Amtrak along. They are doing just fine in Depew. |

Yes. I was through there several times in the 1970's, including the start of one of the Jan 1977 blizzards. It was sewer. Everything about it was gross, waiting room, bathrooms, stairs. No concessions. Then there's the so-called stairs. The snow was piling up. The steps were totally snow-covered. I had to lie almost flat down, grab the bannister with one hand, my smaller bag with the other, hooked the suitcase around my foot, and crawled up the slope. Much easier to simply get off at Depew, and walk out of the dept. Somebody in Buffalo got the idea from St Paul Union Depot. |

In an early weekday afternoon, I could have laid down in the middle of Main Street near the NFTA terminal and not get run over.Given that as of 2011, Main Street downtown had been closed to vehicular traffic for nearly 30 years, you are actually correct. But that's not what you were trying to convey, was it? |

The extension to the North Campus area is back on the table again, should have been done a long time ago, lots of activity at UB, and along the whole Millersport Hway area. |

Must have been the street next to it. It was a block away from the bus station. In any case, downtown was dead. The bus I took from Dick Road (I walked from Amtrak to Genessee 1.9 miles), that originated at the Airport, to downtown never had more than 5 people on it. |

Yes, I wasn't suggesting Millersport as a route, I was just mentioning how much "stuff" is out there now. Shopping, hotels, Northtown Center. Lots of people don't realize how many of the areas surrounding Buffalo are actually pretty nice. Anything that links the general area w/downtown would help both. |
