Steam heat for older non-HEP cars. The original place steam-heated cars got their steam from was the boiler of a steam locomotive; the general practice was to send about 10 psi per car into the steam heat system. Electrics and diesels, when they came along, needed a boiler on board to keep the heat for the cars. Sometimes things got reversed; for example, the car behind #909 here has a HEP generator on board, since the locomotive doesn't have one for those Amfleet I cars. |

Rode old and vintage cars that claimed to have steam heat or old "air conditioners", but never with it functioning.Must've been nice in the winter versus the dry heating coils. |

Used for a while as the Wilmington Shop switcher. This unit also saw service as a self-propelled snowmelter for wintertime clearing of switches, by means of a downward venting blower. |

Last train departed on 04/07/1952 and the building was gone by 1953. Penn Center stands on the site now, and the place looks all the uglier for that.I wonder what things would have been like if instead of the CCCT tunnel being built, the railroad was instead extended eastward onto the Reading from Broad Street Station on new elevated tracks. |

I can only recall one instance of being on a train pulled by a GG1.I was drafted March 22nd, 1965. We boarded at Pennsylvania Station, NYC. We road in a Pullman Car that had births in the overhead luggage spot, and the lower birth was a combo of the seats below. We changed loco's in Philly, made a stop in Wash. D.C. and continued to Columbia S.C. and directly into USA Army, Ft. Jackson, the next morning. What an adventure! |

I actually got to ride steam-heated cars in Ireland in the very late 1990s. The Cravens cars were steam-heated, and they got retired when they were about 43 years old (in 2006); Irish Rail was completely nuts to retire the Mark 3 cars at just 25 years old. This fan trip video shows the preserved Cravens as they are now. They never wore that paint scheme when in service. |

Maybe if the E60s had a comparable wheel arrangement to the GG1, they would have been running up until the late 2000s and we never would have heard of the AEM-7. |

We have many. Most actual marketers (calling themselves manufacturers although the production is mostly contracted out) spend a great deal on the "look and feel" of new products, but don't often tout the outside designers. |
