2016 Parade of Trains |
|
Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Sat Jun 25 18:58:29 2016 2016 Parade of Trains Once again the New York Transit Museum staged a “Parade of Trains” at Brighton Beach just as they had done last year. Four trains were operating . The BU Gate Cars 1404-1273-1407 ran as a shuttle on the northbound express track (A4) between Brighton Beach and Ocean Parkway. The other three train sets ran between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway using the express tracks in both directions. 1) “The Train of Many Metals” consisted of R-38 4028-9, R-42 4572-3 and R-40 4280-81. All six 2) “The Arnie Train” consisted of R-1 381, R-6 1300 & 1000 and R-9 1802. 3) “The AB-D Train was quite a surprise. The consist was B-Type 2390-1-2 and D-Type 6112. The MU connections have been modified so the two units can run together. The doors however must be operated separately . Several members of this board were there including our resident LIRR historian Bob Andersen, Bill Newkirk and myself. The trains are running on Sunday, June 26 so take a ride if you can. Bring a camera (if you have one). Bring a friend (if you have one). Larry, RedbirdR33 |

The steels had an entirely different type of electric portion from the Ds and R-9s. Also, the door jumpers were in different places, the steels having the door jumper under the drawhead and the Ds having it long side the bulkhead door which is why the doors cannot be operated on the entire train from either type car. You would think that the car equipment people working on them could have added the door control pins to the electric portion on both types so that the doors could be operated on the entire train from either type. |

If the operation was scheduled to go on a bit later in the day like 500 or 600PM I would have gone, but by the time I got out of church and ate breakfast, the 400PM end time was a little too close for me to be able to make it. |

I as there today (Sunday). What really amazed me was that they were able to get the door controls on B-type 2391 to actually work so that all the doors could open. From what I was told it took many months to rebuild those controls (as compared to the BMT Centennial when they had to open doors by hand). It should be pointed out that the door controls were removed and plated over in Cars 2390 and 2392. One thing that was noticeable was that they didn't stencil the car numbers on the interior. I liked seeing the ancient metal route/destination signs placed in the BU's. |

I would think the problem would be getting a snake through the existing conduits to be able to pull new wires between the places they are needed, especially with old old wires in place. One would have to know the junction box layout to see if this can be minimized or alternatively bypassed with new conduit.Bill |

If one can get the old ones to move, (very big if) one copuld be used in lieu of a snake (fish tape) Lots of pulling slime. |

Considering the frequency at which these cars in this configuration run with passengers, I would say a second conductor is significantly more cost and time effective :). |

It almost didn't happen. When I got there just before 12 PM on Sunday the motors on the Standards kept dropping out when the motorman moved the controller. It was about 7 minutes (and a lot of tries) before everything started moving. |

Posted by randyo on Mon Jun 27 15:15:35 2016, in response to Re: 2016 Parade of Trains, posted by Bill West on Sun Jun 26 19:56:42 2016. Relocating the cables would be required anyhow when replacing the older “slide” with a more up to date electric portion since the devices are actually quite different. On the steels, the contacts are on the bottom of the slide and when withdrawn, the slide makes a loop circuit with the base of the electric portion. When the slide is advanced, it inserts into the opposite drawhead and pushes the slide on the other car and mates with the contract on the base of the electric portion. Advancing the slide is not automatic and is accomplished my utilizing the “advance”position on the uncoupling valve. On the newer portions, the contacts are on the front of the electric portion and when the coupling is made, both portions advance automatically and the contacts meet each other face to face. That would mean that the cables to the couplers are in slightly different positions on the steels from where they are on the Ds and R-9s and the differences in the portions is also why the SI cars could not be coupled to the steels since the SIs had the more modern version of the electric portion. By the way, many of the BMT old timers referred to both types of electric portions as “slides”even though they were 2 different types. |
