That train is sleeker and more integrated that what's running today. The locomotives and the cars match perfectly, as if they were a gift set. When a design is done truly right, it is right forever. But how did they ever platform that thing? |

The Es looked something like this: And the train looked something like this: To think, people complain about Amtrak having mismatched paint schemes. |

If not for Government regulation the Hill Lines would have been merged by this point & the your desired common paint scheme would have been achieved. Additionally Burlington would have needed to paint some passenger engines in a rendition of Northern Pacific colors to appease both the owning roads. Anyway CB&Q E units were used east of the Twin Cities to take advantage of their higher gear ratio. |

The wonders of B&W photography ;-)But in a more substantial way, they did match. It would not be all that hard to roll the loco through the company paint shop if it was normally assigned to the train, that is if anyone cared. What DOES match is the profile of the train; the loco's sides and roof match right up to the train, so the assembly is one integrated piece. -------------- Contrast that with, say, an Amtrak Anteater (sorry, I don't know the proper name) hitched to the curved-side cars (Metroliners?). I looks like it's designed to make as much air drag and wind noise as possible at the locomotive to first car join, and then have speed brakes hanging off the sides. Trains of other than Metroliner cars may be as assemblage of different heights and styles, so again nothing matches. Yeah, there's reason for all the above, but it looks like cr-p, and at 100mph it adds a lotta drag. |
