Allan Rosen and the 34th Street (Herald Square) elevator |

David,Aside from mentioning the system on the subway map NYCT is under no obligation to detail PATH facilities. PATH certainly doesn't mention much about the NYC Subway. While Mr. Rosen has an interesting idea (which he should have thought out further before putting fingers to keys), you have it correct on your page that the upward ramp from the PATH unpaid area to the 34th St unpaid area would be too steep for someone in a wheelchair (and probably someone on crutches or using a cane as well). Allan Rosen's ASSertions are pretty much that. |

The MTA can't guarantee that the path elevator is working. They can't guarantee there will be no obstructions between the path elevator and the MTA areas. |

Also, IF the chair is being pushedby a companion, many non compliant ramps can be negotiated. That said, myexperience w/ a friend trying to use the F from Herald Square we had difficulty making the"step" up to the floor of (maybe) an R-4x. Between her power chair and my determined tugging we got in, but alone her chair would not have done it. |

No worries on that. Worked for the state, and now work for Apple. We hire the (ugh, how I hate this word) "handicapable." Been there to help many over the years and the small wheel and the big wheel are well known to those who use chairs. I was just wondering if the old "reverse move" failed as well, then it would be a problem to everyone. As I'm sure you know, when there are disabilities, you have to adapt and work with them. I was just wondering about the details here because some disabled people are spoiled and aren't willing to make their OWN accommodations in order to get around. Sometimes you have to punt, goes the same for the well-abled. |

I might add ... the MTA is a STATE agency and it just so happens that there is a state agency for the disabled. I've worked with them many times in the past when I worked for the state, and they are GREAT people there. If your friend assessed the situation as sorely lacking and would like to do something about it, they should contact the Office of Advocate for Persons with Disabilities. The Office of Advocate for Persons with Disabilities (OAPwD) is a systems advocacy agency for people with disabilities. Its primary mission is to ensure that people with disabilities have every opportunity to be productive and participating citizens through: full access to emerging technology; access to up-to-date, comprehensive information on and referral to programs and services available to people with disabilities and their families; and, implementation of progressive legislation protecting the equal rights of people with disabilities. For information about OAPwD, call (800) 522-4369 or (518) 473-6005, (voice, TTY and Spanish call (518) 473-4129), electronic BBS call (800) 943-2323 or refer to the OAPwD Web site at http://www.cqc.ny.gov/. Many of the people I used to work with when I was with the state are still there, and they're an excellent place to point out failings and needs with OTHER state agencies. :) |

Is it not my style to update a post reflecting whether he was fired or not. My post was intended to determine if NYCT should have mentioned the PATH elevator in their service notice and whether Mr. Rosen is correct that mobility impaired customers can use the alternate elevator instead of traveling to another station. Based on my field visit along with close observations, Mr. Rosen was clearly incorrect and NYCT's information about the 34th street elevator is accurate. |
