The Winston and Don Q ads date this pic to around 1983 or 1984, at that! I believe cigarette ads were gone from the NYC subways by the time Dinkins was sworn in... |

Cigarette ads were banned in 1993.That said, the above end door ad panels were seemingly used for nothing but cigarette ads, so nothing replaced them. I remember ads in place which must have been after the 1993 ban. In the later 1990s, stripmaps were placed in that position. |

Dinkins' term started 1/1/90, by then, graffiti was virtually gone from the subways. There were more problem than Graffiti by Dinkens's time. It reminds me of George Carlin's old "Hippy Dippy Weatherman" routine [paraphrased]: "At the top of the map, we see thunderstorms coming in ... also some Russian ICBMs, so I wouldn't sweat the thunderstorms." |

He grew up in a wealthy Republican family, so he became the "Fusion" candidate, instead of jumping ship. He ignored the middle class which only accelerated white flight. I hated him as mayor, but I always thought he would have made an excellent Parks Commissioner! |

The paint on that car between being faded and graffitied is so hard to see that I really can’t tell if it’s the original or if it’s the Ronan puke green and grey. |
