Posted by SLRT on Sat May 9 10:34:54 2015, in response to Unused Trackways by 9th Avenue, posted by Dj Hammers on Sat May 9 02:07:17 2015. I was recently on a Southbound D train, and noticed a few interesting things.1: Right before entering the old two track brick tunnel after briefly entering daylight south of 36th Street, to the right of the tunnel portal that my train went in appears to be what looks like two sealed off tunnel portals. What are these? Provisions for more tracks? Effectively bellmouths for an additional two tracks if needed for service and/or the SBK. 2: Right before exiting this same tunnel, an unused trackway comes in from the right. What was this meant for? Ramps for 5th Avenue El trains to enter 9th Avenue without interfering with the yard (next set of ramps). They did have tracks at the beginning but they were abandoned fairly early and the 5th Avenue el trains were routed through the yard space at the north end to use the existing set of ramps. |

I believe Dj hammers (for number 2) isn't talking about the abandon 5th ave ramps, he is talking about another trackway that appears to merge with the south bound track before exiting the no clearance tunnel to outside. theres no track and the end wall from what i can recall is half cinderblocked. from the looks of it, it appears to be the other end of that first wall from the 4th ave open cut mentioned in number one |

Assuming you're sure of the location, there is certainly available space there for a trackway. and the end looks like they've enclosed a secure storage room (vents and a large door). |

Posted by Michael549 on Sat May 9 14:32:30 2015, in response to Re: Unused Trackways by 9th Avenue, posted by tunnelrat on Sat May 9 14:05:51 2015. The 36th Street-Fourth Avenue BMT station is in a way similar to the 5th Street-Columbus Circle-IND station in the creation of a pair of merge tracks that exist between the usual local and express tracks. These merge tracks then proceed down Sixth Avenue, or in the case of the 36th Street-Fourth Avenue BMT station toward the 9th Avenue station. On the NYC-Subway.Org website is easy to see the track setup, below is the website:http://www.nycsubway.org/wiki/Station:_36th_Street_%284th_Avenue%29 A review of the above web-page is in order. Basically the station layout had the provision for 4 tracks from the 9th Avenue station to merge with the 36th Street-Fourth Avenue station, however there were changes to the station and its track work. It is easy to surmise that these changes could also be a part of what is being looked at in this message stream. Mike |
