I send this post to a police officer friend in Chicago, here is his reply to the thread:Wow, what an episode... these incidents do happen more often than not; especially with so-called "officers". I think Nilet handled the incident extremely well, even having a copy of the TA policies with him. At first I understood the concern of the "officers" but after speaking with Nilet they should have let the matter drop. Handcuffing a subject is a proper procedure as you said, then uncuffing said person is also proper procedure once the situation is defused. I'm sure they thought that if they deleted the photos of their identity he would have let the whole thing go, but they WERE WRONG. I would call it "damage to property" for deleting the pics, not robbery since they didn't deprive him of his belongings permanently (other than the saved data). He was correct in contacting the administration and filing a complaint, thank the rail gods that they found in his favor. Also that the memory card was restored. Keeping in touch with the investigator is also crucial, it keeps them on their toes and not working a number of other cases instead. Obviously there could be a terrorist threat possibility by taking pics or video of public buildings, sworn officers are actively on the lookout for that type of activity. He was questioned about it, he answered truthfully and that should have been the end. They erred in their continuing harassment and damage to property. Then also they can be charged with destroying the evidence of their unofficial "investigation" since they never made out a report (or I don't think they did) as well as official misconduct. My guess is they WILL be fired. |

Cops don't mess with people for no reason.Not true. When I was a little kid, my father told me that he was once arrested for absolutely no reason. (This probably happened in the 1930s.) He was just walking down the street when all of a sudden, everyone else started to run when the cops were approaching. My father didn't run because he did nothing wrong, so he was arrested! The police just figured he was "with the others." I doubt it if much has changed since. If you're a person of color, it is only worse. I'm not saying it happens all the time or that cops are bad, but a generalization like that just isn't true. |
