Some parts of Atlanta are reminiscent of Scranton PA, the oft-touted "Electric City". Not likely that COLTS would spend any dough to bring back the city namesake though. |

Washington barely has a serious winter. (where I grew up) If they put off the debuta week it will be 53 years since shutdown of DC Transit. Wasn't very cold that night just depressing. Too bad Joe Saitta didn't live long enough to see the new line open. |

Posted by Jon Bell on Sat Jan 3 23:58:02 2015, in response to PHOTOS: Atlanta Streetcar yesterday (part 1), posted by Jon Bell on Fri Jan 2 18:52:37 2015. Thanks, everyone! I may be going to a weekend convention in Atlanta at the end of the month, which would give me a chance to do the western part of the loop out to Centennial Olympic Park.I forgot to mention that this was my first experience with the Breeze Card, the smart card that MARTA has been using since 2006. I had to pay a buck extra for the card, in addition to loading it with a couple of fares for the train to and from downtown (the streetcars are free for now). I just have to remember to take it with me when I go back. Jeez, it's been a long time since I've been there... looks like it must have been 2003 or 2004! I think it was partly because I didn't have other events there to piggyback a railfan excursion onto, and partly because of reports I saw for a while, about harassment of photographers. Hopefully this streetcar line will be successful enough to breathe new life into the original idea for a line along Peachtree Street north to Buckhead and the Lenox Square area. Even when I was last there ten years ago, the stretch between the Arts Center MARTA station and Lenox Square was packed with shops and nightspots, and the bus route along there was the busiest one in the whole MARTA system. Years ago, it looked like the Peachtree streetcar might actually get going, but then it lost momentum for some reason and they decided to go with a shorter starter line instead. |

I think he’s referring specifically to light rail since we attempted to get a light rail system on 42 St Manhattan over 20 years ago and still haven’t been able to do it. Another attempt at light rail in Red Hook/Downtown Bkln hasn’t fared any better. |

But maybe it should run up Marietta St, to better serve the Georgia Tech area and Atlantic Station, then make its way to Peachtree St, either via 16th St or private r-o-w, then turn north onto Peachtree to serve the areas north of the Arts Center MARTA station. |

We were talking about the new modern streetcar service in Atlanta. Unless the Baltimore city government has a plan for a similar kind of service in the works, your post is completely irrelevant. |

I really don’t see much difference between the present Baltimore light rail system and a “streetcar” system other than the Baltimore system has a bit more private ROW running then a number of current streetcar systems. |
