PHOTOS: Atlanta Streetcar yesterday (part 1) |
|
Posted by Jon Bell on Fri Jan 2 18:52:37 2015 I had been hoping to see the opening of the Atlanta Streetcar while I'm on Christmas break, but it kept getting put off, and I forgot to check their web site all last week. Then on Wednesday (New Year's Eve) I thought to look, and found out it had opened just the day before! It had been announced a week earlier when I wasn't looking. So I drove down the next day (yesterday), because we had good weather. Including a meal stop each way, and taking MARTA between Doraville and downtown, it was 4.5 hours each way. I got off to a late start because I was up for New Year's Eve; and I had to start for home around 3:30 so as to get out of the metro area and its traffic before dark. So I ended up with only about three hours of action. I figured I'd start off with a complete ride around the line, then take pictures. Would you believe it took more than 45 minutes to complete a 2.7 mile circuit? The car was jam-packed because of the novelty factor, the holiday, and the free fares (through the end of March). With all that, I had only enough time to explore the eastern part of the line, around the King Historic District and the carbarn, and take a few pictures near Peachtree Center. So here we go... First a couple of scenes on Peachtree Street: At Sweet Auburn Market (which was closed for the holiday): The carbarn is underneath the elevated I-75/85 expressway. There are four cars and four storage tracks: two indoors and two outdoors. Cars 1002, 1003 and 1004 were running, leaving 1001 all by itself on one of the outdoor storage tracks. |
