PHOTOS: Muni Heritage Weekend, Part 1A |

Posted by milantram on Sun Nov 23 09:49:39 2014 On November 1 and 2, 2014, the San Francisco Municipal Railway hosted its third annual Muni Heritage Weekend. This is a weekend where Muni brings out a slew of historic streetcars, cable cars, trolley coaches and motor buses that don't normally run during the year. Special services and displays are offered. The historic transit booster organization Market Street Railway was heavily involved in promoting this weekend. This year, such treasures as Muni A-Type 1, its very first streetcar from 1912, 578S, built in 1895, and its newest Blackpool "Boat" tram, car 233, were in service or on display. Among the buses and trolley coaches used were a 1950 Marmon-Herrington trolleybus, a "Baby White" from 1938, a GMC Fishbowl form 1969, and others. And an original O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde cable car operated on the California Street line. This was also the first Heritage Weekend that I was able to attend. I missed the first two years due to Superstorm Sandy in 2012 and my father's death in 2013. There are many aspects of Heritage Weekend I will cover with these pics. Some of these are routine operations. So sit back, enjoy the ride! Part 1A, Saturday, November 1, 2014--Pullout to first operations. Since my previous visit, all regular-service F-Line cars now pull out from and pull in to Metro East. So my first order of business was to get the pullouts along Muni Metro Extension (MMX) at night and at dawn, since it was the last day of Daylight Saving Time. The first pullout car I encountered was "Torpedo" PCC 1009 (Dallas). It's turning from Don Chee Way onto Steuart. Another "Torpedo" PCC, 1006 (Muni Wings), heads inbound at Ferry Plaza. Milan car pullout at Mission/Embarcadero. I couldn't resist this shot of the Bay Bridge, and Cupid's Bow. So what if it's am OT shot? Muni Metro trains also are pulling out from Metro East, such as this N-Judah train approaching Brannan Station. Next F-Line pullout car was Milano 1807, in 1928-vintage Milan yellow/white. Trailing shot at Embarcadero/Townsend. PCC 1070 (Newark, formerly Newark 14) was next, approaching King Street/3rd Street. Morning is breaking. PCC 1059 (Boston) turns the corner at 4th Street/King, from the T-Line to MMX. Note the optical illusion... Then I went up to Castro for breakfast at Orphan Andy's, and caught the action there. In this scene, 1807 and 1006 lay over at Castro. The piazza was getting a makeover in conjunction with the revamping of Castro Street, so it was not a good place for pictures. After breakfast, I met up with retired Subchatter Richard Panse and we got a ride on the "Dinky", 578S, as it was coming down the grade in Dolores Park. We rode it all the way to the Ferry Building. HDRphoto in Dolores Park, approaching 19th Street. After 578S arrived at Ferry Plaza, it had to loop around the Hotel Vitale (built on Muni-owned land in 2005) sat Embarcadero/Mission. That's 1975-built AM General 4154 parked at the curb. HDR image. Later, 578S takes a load of happy riders to Pier 39. 1969 GMC 3287 is parked on Steuart Street, in its original red/gold livery. The view was taken from Marmon-Herrington trolley coach 776. Other vintage cars participating on Saturday were A-Type 1, Muni's first streetcar, built in 1912 and the only operating vintage car currently based at Metro East... …and B-Type 130 (1914), seen at the Ferries with outbound PCC 1052 (Los Angeles). Next: Part 1B--General operations, and the historic rubber-tired fleet. |

The history of PCC 1070 is quite interesting. In Newark, it was the last PCC in service to operate, on August 24, 2001. The reason for that accomplishment was because car 6, which NJT had repainted in 1954 livery, was full up, so 14 was assigned for the overflow crowd. Then, when Muni was considering buying ex-Newark PCCs, car 14 came out west and did a test run to develop specs for the rest of the proposed ex-Newark fleet. Originally, 15 cars were planned, but then the money ran out and Muni could only buy 11 cars. Here is the future Muni 1070 doing a test run on April 9, 2002, at Steuart and Don Chee Way. Admittedly not a very good shot, but I have to find the original slide and re-scan it. That could take months! When it came time to do the first rehab contract with Brookville, car 14 was the last to go to Brookville, because it was still in San Francisco, and nine of the other 10 were still at NJTransit (1080 was the other ex-Newark car here). But it was the first to return, which it did in 2006! |
