The history of PCC 1070 is quite interesting. In Newark, it was the last PCC in service to operate, on August 24, 2001. The reason for that accomplishment was because car 6, which NJT had repainted in 1954 livery, was full up, so 14 was assigned for the overflow crowd. Then, when Muni was considering buying ex-Newark PCCs, car 14 came out west and did a test run to develop specs for the rest of the proposed ex-Newark fleet. Originally, 15 cars were planned, but then the money ran out and Muni could only buy 11 cars. Here is the future Muni 1070 doing a test run on April 9, 2002, at Steuart and Don Chee Way. Admittedly not a very good shot, but I have to find the original slide and re-scan it. That could take months! When it came time to do the first rehab contract with Brookville, car 14 was the last to go to Brookville, because it was still in San Francisco, and nine of the other 10 were still at NJTransit (1080 was the other ex-Newark car here). But it was the first to return, which it did in 2006! |
