Your assumption that presence in an abandoned station only involves trespassing is absurd at best.Reading comprehension really isn't your thing, is it? I never made that assumption, nor have I tried to argue that claim. I have pointed out that rkba made that claim, which is self-evidently absurd. |

A little before service was terminated there I did catch a train from Union Hall Street to Hempstead, around, I think, 1976. Liked waiting on that platform in the real "heart" of Jamaica. I've also seen some rats that one would want to avoid. The ROW may very well have some refugees from the subway lurking about-- or they could have made their way up the abandoned ramp from the underground section of the LIRR, and who knows what sort of creatures humans have deposited there over the years. |

"Gone dead train" (name of a cut off the Performance soundtrack album.)My Dad remembers having to go down to police headquarters* during the 30s as a teenager, he remembered viewing the South Ferry complex from street level, and told me, "All I remember is that there were els everywhere." * had to ID suspects in a robbery he and a friend were caught in, up in Middletown, NY where he lived. - And what were the Q's like to operate during the last decade or so of their lives? |

The Q cars were the original gate cars, just heavily modified. They were gone out of service by the time I got there, but did get to play with gate cars at Branford. The brake handle was on the left, and a good bit higher than later cars. The controllers though were an absolute hoot. Ever been on a good old fashioned Otis freight elevator with the elevator manual controller? Worked exactly the same way! :)Tried to find image of BMT controller, couldn't find it quickly, but it was similar to this: |

The last time I was in a building with passenger elevator operators was in 1992, at Broadway and Chambers St., it looked like it hadn't even been dusted for 70 years.Said building now looks to have been converted to multimillion dollar residences. The municipal building was like that, aging and not taken care of, but showing it's age was like a time machine back a few decades, feeling as though if you stepped off the elevator on the ground floor, downstairs you get a train of D-types or 2700-2800 ABs when they were relatively new... |

Thanks, & thanks for the picture - will see if I can find the image of a BMT controller.I actually did get to ride the Q's, during the spring and early summer of '68, when someone told me they were still operating, I got myself down there within a couple of months. Took some B & W photos of them, which I can't share since I don't have a scanner at home. I was on the final ERA trip the day after closure, in October '69. Took some color slides that day. Unfortunately, missed the gate cars, they were still operating when I was eight years old (1958), but my Dad wasn't Brooklyn person, so he didn't know anything about them. I was in the first grade when the C's were still operating. I like to think that if he'd known about them we'd have driven down from Queens Village (lived at intersection of Hillside & Springfield) to ride them. His experience was with the west side IRT (he remembers the Hi-V locals) and the IND, parents married in '44 lived in NYC as my Dad finished Dental School till 1950 when he went into the service for Korea. They lived on the upper west side, then down on 12th street - that's when my Dad got to take the Bluebirds once, to Eighth Ave. on the Canarsie Line. |

Also, a year or so earlier, read about the Canarsie grade crossing at 105th. So I spent a weekend in '66 or '67 in the Bronx (right above the IRT at 242nd) rail fanning with the son of friends of the family. He wasn't a buff, but being a techie, had an interest in the subway. We took the A to 14th, then the Canarsie out to Rock Parkway and back - first time I rode AB's, did the Brighton Line to Coney, then the Sea Beach back to Manhattan. Typical rail fan weather for pictures - grey, overcast and drizzly most of the time. Somehow we wound up on the IRT and did the City Hall loop, the lights were not on. Then, back to the Bronx. I had a camera, he took his movie picture, got films of 105th etc. Haven't seen him since New Years, '68 or '69. Who knows where the film is now. |
