The M couldn't possibly go to the 6th Ave. local track because A + F already exceeds 30 tph.

The Manhattan 8th Ave local track can't possibly handle A + C + E. Can the E go express?

(A) would remain on 8th Avenue to West 4th Street. LOCAL tracks can interchange between 6/8 and Rutgers/Cranberry at West 4th Street. The Express Tracks cannot. This is why I moved the (A) train to the Local tracks at 50th Street.

(E) could go express, it could also be the service to terminate at Broadway-Nassau while the north (C) terminates at WTC. Good plan on that one.

What they should do and what they would do are two different things.

But here's what I would do:

Relay all Brooklyn trains at Jay St. Reduce A line service to only Far Rockaway trains and have Ozone Park C trains run local while Far Rockaway A trains run express. Rockaway Park shuttle would need a schedule change to cover for the lack of Rockaway Park A specials.

(The cause of the reduction of service is to allow for smooth relays at Jay St).

Relay all Manhattan trains at Chambers St. Reduce service on both lines slightly so that the relay can be done. The crush-load of passengers will be lessened anyway since there is no access to Fulton St or Brooklyn.

Eliminate Z trains and extend the J line to Bay Ridge or West End, and/or move the Q line to join the R in the Montague tunnel, at least during rush hours, so that there are plenty of options awaiting the A and C passengers at Jay St. J train frequency from ENY and west would be very high at the rush hours (special relays at ENY to go back to Manhattan, drawing passengers off the A/C at ENY).

Why speculate on something that may never happen? Also its possible that train routes might be changed prior to the imangined event happening

Also what effect, if any, would the completion of the 2nd Avenue subway have on your plans. That assumes we will all be around when that happens.

I am sure that the TA has some convoluted plan in case that emergency ever arises!

My approach would be this:

(Q) via Montague
(N) via Montague, all local
(D) 205th to Grand Street*
(B) 145th/Bedford Park Blvd to Grand Street*
(T) Coney Island - Pacific Street via West End

*Temporary service pattern pending the construction of a crossover at Grand Street:

(D) 205th to 34th
(B) 145th/Bedford Park Blvd to 34th
(S) West 4th to Grand

This is why Phase Four of the SAS should have connections to both the Montague Tunnel and the 6th Avenue line. I also say that after Phase Two, this should be the next phase to be built.

Sure, jamming five lines into the tunnel seems unpleasant. But, with some creative routing, much of that can be eliminated.

The F would replace the D on the West End line, running from 36th Street/4th Avenue to Jamaica via Coney Island.

The D, which would switch over to the Brighton Line via the SAS, would work in a similar manner to replace the N, ending at 59th Street, but extending to 36th Street when frequency allows.

The R would operate its full route 24/7. The N would be cut back to Whitehall Street. The B would operate as a 6th Avenue local to 2nd Avenue. The Concourse Express would be eliminated.

This leaves the D, Q, and R running through the Montague.

They're going to have to be. Salt water destroys metals. I'm amazed having seen the estimates to repair that there's trains running at all through some of them. I just pray that with all the money that needs to go into them that they'll come up with some kind of working cork for them if another Sandy comes down BEFORE the water gets in them.

The G would replace the D on the West End line, running from 36th Street/4th Avenue to Court Square via Coney Island, connecting with the D and R trains at 36th Street for service to Manhattan. This would result in F trains terminating at Coney Island to relay in Coney Island Yard instead of in the station.

The D would be rerouted to the Sea Beach line to replace the N. The Q line would remain unchanged.

The R would operate its full route 24/7. The N would be cut back to Whitehall Street. The B would operate as a 6th Avenue local to 2nd Avenue.

This leaves the D, Q, and R running through the Montague.

The Culver line can only access one platform at Coney Island. Having the F terminate there while the G runs through would be a massive bottleneck, unless you were planning to send F trains across the yard after Avenue X.

It was keeping a platform clear waiting for it to show up, open up, leave, make sure it was far enough behind a departing seabits to roll, line it up, make it pass and that was on a good day. I asked about it when I was there just to hear about the long-gone run and everybody rolled their eyes because it had to come in on the Q platform then leave and go through the interlocking to the seabits holding up everything on either side of it to clear.

It was bad enough in the mornings moving trains out of STL yard and CI yard to get to those platforms, having contramoves on top of it completely screwed up everything in and out of STL in both directions. :(

Old timers described it as the most stupid thing anyone could have thought of because all they did was look at the stations, not any other movements in and out of there.
