Those pics are as great as my response is late!

So what's the extra track in the 1966 pic? Was the three-track section originally longer?

It was a place to set out bad order cars as you probably saw in the next image. Just a little bit further down the rails was the old Kingsbridge freight yard (which is where the JFK educational complex is today) and it was a fast move after traffic to move things there to the yard if needed. Kind of the last chance to get bad order equipment off the railroad before the ladders into GCT and much higher traffic "south" of there.

It is unfortunate that low-floor cars became a possibility only after high platforms had been built at many stations.

Or fall on their face on the platform if the steps picked up snow and after the last stop. That was one of the things I wasn't too happy about in winter on arnines - kicking that off the step plates only to have to do it again next stop.

I do but only where there are Superliners and other types of hilevel cars (like Gallery, etc). It's pretty cool to have the entrance/exit on the lower level.

High platforms are good if you are intending to eventually subway-ize your railroads.
