If Sarnelli Brothers collected their scraps from Coney Island Yard by City Yard, then were was this picture location below? Avenue X did not have a pier to my memory and according to this
vintage everyday website it is South Brooklyn.

White tall building looking somewhat like a project does not or did not exist there. Was suggested to me might be 207 but tha isnt the old incinerator. Not Linden Yard or Greenville, but was there old rickety piers at 207 or Avenue X then?

I think Sarnelli Brothers operated a small pier on the Arthur Kill, Staten Island, near Saw Mill Creek. On or near the foot of Chelsea Road.

Might makecsense because these cars are going through stages of demolition. When theycleft Coney Island Yard, they were halved and chained to trucks byt mostly intact. I dont know much about SI

As a kid I remember R1's piled up like that in 207th St. Yard when
passing by on the Major Deegan Expressway.My guess is the photo is taken near 207th St. Yard. As an aside, remember the movie " Cotton
comes to Harlem" ? I remember a few scenes in that general area.

1971 was Scrap Year for the R-4 fleet at 207 Street Yard. My Dad got me a box of brass dogtags from about 40 of these cars - still have them.

When I worked at 207, I remember seeing remnants of a pier. It was right about where the ramp comes down from the IRT. There is a crossing for vehicles there and out by the river by that crossing were all old timbers sticking up as if there was a pier there.

I had no clue anything was cut up there. I thought everything was scrapped at Coney Island and grew up in Kingsbridge and never saw scrap cars uptown. Thanks!

I have to agree with you.
My second would be the "D" Types, the Triplexes.
I can count on one hand the number of times I road on them.
They just didn't serve where I traveled, before I was fully addicted.

I still have fantasies about a fan trip or worse, an MTH release of Triplexes.

Yes, I know about the old pier slip with the gantry but I saw something else. This was in the front of the yard where ramp comes down from the IRT. The old gantry was in the back.

I never did much of 207 other than once for a yard transfer, but I think the old slip was right about where the barge is now. I don't remember the old wreck pier in the photo at all, but then again I never really spent any time at 207 even though I lived up in the Marble Hill PJ's and walked by it on tenth ave there often on the street.

You've really got me wondering if that pier you're pointing at isn't newer than the original one seen in the old photos. I recall the slip tracks there being parallel with all of the others in the yard, and on the south end of it where that barge is. But it's been SO long, I really don't remember.

Is it just me, 318 has two segments. One on top of the other.
Yet, the astute student will note, those two segments would only make a car with three doors per side.
A section is missing! A missing property report must be filed!

The other pier with the gantry in the old photos is closer to the back of the yard or further north. See the water line of the yard and going towards the back or the right of the picture it suddenly cuts in perfectly square inwards and then continues north or right again, that is where the other pier was. Its remnants are right behind todays garbage platform.

Yep. That one was still in place when I lived down there although disused. The one I'm referring to was even earlier than that one and was at the south end of those tracks where the barge is in that photo. If you look at the earliest arrival photos, you'll see that. The photos where the new arnines were marked up as BB's to Essex.

For this picture, I find it interesting that the (currently) two most commmon train lengths other than 10 cars are not represented: 4 and 8. I see:
1 2 car train
2 3 car trains
2 5 car trains
1 6 car train
3 9 car trains
and a whole lotta 10 car trains.

I know, and IIRC this picture was taken before the first day of service for the IND. My point was that I found it interesting there were no 8 or 4 car consists, whereas nowadays pretty much every B division yard will have 4 and 8 car consists laying around somewhere...

If you wanted to see more 8 and 4 car consists, then the yard would have needed many more shorter tracks. In the case of current consists, a particular track can hold 2 600' A trains or 2 480' C trains.

In the early days of the IND they were running far fewer cars than 8 and 10. More like 3 and 4.

Correct. Even into the 1960s, late PM, midnight and Sunday AAs ran 3 car consists as I believe the GG did also. There is also a stock film clip which was used in a Superman episode as well as several other programs requiring subway scenes that show a 7 car AA local train. I recall that midnight A and D services ran 5 car consists in the 1960s.

You are right. I gather when they moved them out of 207 they needed very low clearance on their trailers to clear the els. 318 also has its compressor stuffed into its interior, pieces of roof laying on the floor. I guess that's why they moved scraps to CI. Making money in junkyards incurs transporting stuff fast to where recycling operations are faster. It took them almost a day per two cars to load up those Concourse wreck cars they needed to be downsized and get them off the property where two R44s were on their way within an hour because they were loaded almost whole with pre arranged prep.

3 car GG consists were common on the weekends during the 60s. I remember as a kid lookin for a first car front window standing way too far down the 65th st platform from where the train stopped. That helped me develop my sprinting skills!

There's another destination sign that's never turned up anywhere - Houston Essex. Add that to Concourse - Fordham, Queens - Roosevelt Av and World's Fair (no, not the one on the WF R-36s).
