The R-10's Last Known Recorded Run - 9/8/1989.

This Date In NYC Transit History: Friday, September 8, 1989 [24 years ago]...

As best it can be determined, the last known recorded run of R-10 cars in regular passenger service was on that date mentioned above. It was said that the final train was the 7:36am put-in from Rockaway Park Yard, and the consist of the cars were n/#3209-3157-2961-3159-3181-3169-3008-3168/s. At that time, and due to a Con Ed asbestos problem along the IND 8th Avenue line at 50th Street, "C" service only operated as far north as 34th Street-Penn Station.

There was said be an observation of this same R-10 train on Friday, September 15, 1989, but there was no further detail or confirmation if it was in actual passenger service, or simply being transferred from yard to another for disposal as scrap. The "C" line assignment sheet during the full week of September 11-15, 1989 did not list any R-10's at all.

And so it goes...

Thanks for posting. I liked the R10s, especially with the dark green paint scheme they wore in their last years.

The thing that really baffles me, is that with their popularity among many fans, how come there isn't a single video of these cars in action minus the one posted on Youtube that shows them and many other cars in action during the 70s and 80s?

The September 11, 1989 car assignment was the first not to list R-10s, though they may have operated for a few days after that date. At the end, the R-10s ran only in C service.

the last time that any R-10's carried any passengers was on the E.R.A. "farewell" fantrip on Sunday, October 29, 1989.

The trip included operating on such lines as the Franklin Avenue Shuttle, the Archer Avenue routes (both levels) and a unscheduled surprise visit to the 63rd Street Line on its first day of revenue service. By the way, prior to the fantrip, these same exact eight R-10 cars were used at the lower level platform of the IND "F" line's Bergen Street station during the production of the thriller motion picture "Jacob's Ladder" starring Tim Robbins, and that train consist appeared in the film released in 1990.

The last of the "Graffiti-fied" R-10s (non-forest green) were removed from service effective November 10, 1988.

Supposedly, one R-10 train was put into service quickly on just one trip on the JFK Express, and that I believe was mentioned inside the brochure printed for and distributed along the 10/29/1989 fan trip. Also, I can attest as an eyewitness that I had seen one train of them in service on the Aqueduct Race Track Special, with car #3348 as the north end rear motor of the train way back (circa 1980 or so) downstairs in the lower level of 42nd Street-8th Avenue.

The R-44's also operated on the JFK Express to/from 21st Street-Queensbridge.

There was a rule that there would be no ABD's (cancelled intervals) of JFK expresses.

On more than 1 occasion, a graffiti scarred B train consist was used when bot lines shared 57/6 as the terminal.

Naturally, the West End line took the hit of the missed interval.

Given a certain paint scheme, some cars looked better in one than others.
R10's looked tacky in red, but R27's looked good.
Arnines looked awful in silver/blue MTA, but R27's looked good.
R32's looked good with blue doors, R16 (one car) , R38's-R42's did not.

I remember the 1989 asbestos problem on the 8th Ave IND. It was caused by a flood which caused by a water main break.

Back them I did know that the R10s would be going soon....but I didn't know it was right then..

Yes- you could also identify yourself as "Mr.A Train" or something similar and we'd know it's you :)

Yes, I have had for so many years been known as with either the names of "Mr. 'A' Train" and/or "Mr. R-10" that were basically given to me by other mass transit fans. It's a delight and honor be associated with that route and the cars when they were together.
