In the late 1960s we still had a few good M/Is around. John Pfahlzer, Warren Kuhl, Walter White, and Dick Cunningham come to mind just off the top of my head. By the way, at the risk of mentioning it, M/I Cunningham is one of the individuals who is reported to have been in the 76 St station shell when he was construction flagging for the completion of Grant Av station in the mid 1950s and got lost on the way to Euclid.

Cunningham ... school car! Yep ... he was VERY good. And had a hell of a sense of humor too. :)

Never said a word about 76th. I suppose that's why. Heh.

He never said a word to me about it either, but the person who told me about the encounter was another flagman who worked with him on the project at the time.

Yeah, I could see that he wouldn't want to be giving that up. One thing about Cunningham was that he was pretty low key about things like that. :)

They suspend the pension for the period of your service.

If a retiree gets a part time job at Home Depot to combat boredom, is his/her pension also suspended or does this only apply to civil service jobs.

Civil service in their own class. For example, once you're in the city or state retirement system, there's nothing keeping you from working for the feds or anybody else. Some retire from NYPD and go deliver mail for USPS. There's one of those among us. :)

They sure wouldn't miss me now. :)

Nah ... the reason why they wanted me back was because of what I'd worked on and others that were in my group went to work for cable and phone companies. Thus, they needed someone who knew where WE buried those bones because they couldn't find them. Heh.

There were also a number of technical things we researched that would have provided for FAR better cable and telephone service when fiber was rolled out, but since the sausage crafters went elsewhere, the work WE did vanished. Happens all the time, I wanted no part of it anymore.

It's not that he kept it any sort of secret but the subject never came up in any of our conversations or interactions.
