The model board clearly shows both the line to 76 St and the ramp to the Grant Av and the Fulton St el. As originally planned, the subway was to continue down Pitkin Av and connect to the LIRR ROW via a ramp from beneath the LIRR in the vicinity of Aqueduct while the branch was to utilize the Fulton St el structure to Lefferts as it does now. As I have mentioned in many posts on this topic, a set of contract drawings I have seen for the el portion indicated that S/O Hudson St, "existing BMT signaling to be used beyond this point." That would indicate that there was to have been n Liberty Jct as we now know it. A B of T report I have from 1950, however, shows a connection between the Fulton St el S/O Rock Blvd to the LIRR ROW which seems to indicate that between the time Euclid opened in 1948 and the time of the report in 1951, the city had abandoned plans to continue the subway farther down Pitkin and opted for the connection to the LIRR from the el instead of a new subway. Interestingly, that connection was supposed to coexist with the building of the connection between the IND Qns Blvd Line N/O 63 Dr although I don't know what sort of junction there would have been between the ramp from the Fulton St el and the tracks coming form Rego Pk. In any event, it was originally planned to have both the connection to the Fulton St el and the extension of the subway down Pitkin coexist and not have one replace the other. |

As long as you mentioned it, from what I have heard, that is the reason the subway was not continued down Pitkin. The contractors supposedly encountered "soil problems" in the area. |

On the street where it is supposed to be, along Pitkin Avenue, just over the Brooklyn border into Queens, there are no traces of evidence, like subway gratings, that anything lies below. On the model board in the control tower at the Euclid Avenue Station, there is a now black-taped over portion that says "76th Street". It also says on the board, that the next tower is at Cross Bay Blvd".The three unused tracks dead-end at a cinder block wall rather than a solid wall, and one track ends at a solid concrete wall. One signal faces the dead-end tunnel about three car lengths from the end of the tunnel, which makes no sense to be there unless the signal was not taken out while or after the tunnel was sealed. There are rumors that the tracks continue past the cinder block wall and into the 76th Street station shell. On the wall of the tunnels leading to 76th Street, there was a sign that read "To Crossbay Blvd". There is also an abandoned shovel at the end of the tunnel. |

Posted by renee gil on Tue Aug 6 19:56:11 2013, in response to Re: Seinfeld Subway Episode, posted by randyo on Mon Aug 5 15:34:07 2013. speaking of 63rd drive, there is a turn-off provision off the D1 Track (Mahattan-bound local) east of the station. This turnoff ramps up to an upper level. It crosses over the existing IND Queens Blvd Subway to curve south, and ends at the edge of the line under Queens Blvd. Well over the years, I've ridden on the eastbound R, GG/G, N, EE and V lines between Roosevelt Avenue and 71st-Continental many times and have seen the turnouts at from the railfan window. I can't recall the exact area, but I know that at least one of the turnouts is very short and comes to a wall perhaps 40ft away from the main line (I believe its the one next to the D2 Track), and, interestingly, even has an emergency exit that was built into the wall that curves away from the main line. The other one goes a little longer. I've read somewhere that one of the tunnels continues as far as 66th Avenue. As I said, it does go a little longer than the other one. These were obviously turnouts intended for lines to be built later, which of course, never were. That emergency exit where the tunnel first turns off.At the 63rd Drive station the structure at the end of the Jamaica/Forest Hills bound end was to be a tower. This structure supposed to be the tower for the proposed Rockaway Line connection. |

And for those who may not know their forestry, weeping willow trees are not at all kind to underground cement. Their roots can travel up to a half mile in search of LOTS of water. You don't want those ANYWHERE near a foundation or underground cement and steel ... especially pipes, be they cast iron or plastic. |
