The MTA seems to have worked very hard to kill it.

I'm not quite pushing 80, but I rode Fulton from Atlantic to Lefferts in the late winter of 1956 just prior to the outer portion being turned over to the IND. It was on a Sunday and there was a single track operation in effect from Grant to Lefferts on K2 track. Mainline trains turned at Grant and a single track shuttle operated to Lefferts. It was also the first time I rode Myrtle which still operated BUs at the time. I also had the good fortune to have ridden the 3 Av El all the way from South Ferry to Gun Hill Rd just before the So/Fy portion was demolished. After I became a M/M in 1968 I operated Qs on Myrtle and R-10s on the outer portion of the Fulton St el to Lefferts. Another of the Bkln els that operated free standing until 1932 when it became a part of the BMT subway is the Culver Line the main portion of which still exists between Ditmas and Stillwell and let's not forger the Franklin shuttle which although heavily rebuilt besides the outer portion of Fulton is the last remaining portion of the Fulton St el that once connected to the Brighton Line. By the way, the existing portion of Myrtle is now back to the way it properly was prior to through routing of M service to the Southern Division and that is railroad SOUTH of Bway Myrtle especially since M trains are now northbound leaving Met like they originally were.

I have vague memories of riding the Fulton el from Rockaway Ave to Linwood St, our stop. I was a few weeks short of 5 yrs old at the April 1956 abandonment. I remember the Linwood Station house as a cute wooden cottage.

To be fair the MTA had a lot of responsibilities at the time. It wasn't only the subway they had to worry about. They had the bus system, LIRR, the bridges and tunnels, the MTA even was the operator of Republic Airport on Long Island. I think the Myrtle and 3rd Ave els were last on the list, but even performing basic maintenance at the stations couldn't hurt.

I was wondering, if the el reopened later in 1973 could they have without Clairmont Parkway station or was the el structure so badly damaged by the fire that it was unsafe for trains to run past the station?

Just a minor correction and clarification, because mainly it was a typing error. It was car #5793 as the third unit [not #5893] on the last regular passenger run, and to clarify that #5754 was at the north end of the train that followed running "lite" (i.e. with no passengers), thus it should been typed as "...-5754/n."

My only ride's on the 3rd Ave El was with my parents when we went to Gun Hill Rd to visit Freedomland amusement for a few weekends, and I remember riding the Fulton El when we went to A&S and a few other stores in that area in the mid 50's. Karl

Question. What was the disposition of those R12/14s after the 3rd Avenue El closed?

From what I understood, the four GE R-14's (#5803-#5806) went back to the IRT main lines, most notably the White Plains Road & Dyre Avenue based routes. Supposedy, and witnessing from my own point, the GE R-12's went into work service immeditately and eventually in various forms and paint schemes, carrying first a "3" sticker number added to the front of their side car numbers.

Car #5760 was fully restored in 1976, and became part of the Transit Museum collection. A batch of the other 3rd Avenue El R-12's plus R-14 #5803 I recall seeing in storage at the 239th Street Yard in the Bronx around 1979. Most of them were eventually retired and scrapped, and car #5782 is the other ex-3rd Avenue R-12 still in existence, but it is doubtful at this time if that car will be restored soon (it is a Transit Museum car too).
