I can save those scientist types some effort ... same thing is a fave for country mice ... PEANUT butter. Always giggled over folks believing that rodents like cheese ... they don't. Peanut butter on the other hand is "to die for" ... :) |

I'd look it up but if I go to TVTropes now I'll be up all night! :) I'm pretty sure the average rodent is lactose intolerant but I used to have a hamster that ate chocolate. |

And yet chocolate can kill a dog, so it's claimed. Out in the sticks, there's plenty of rodents on the loose and the entire objective is stay out of the house. When they come in, baited traps await to dispatch them to toontown. :)Peanut butter really works though in traps - far better than anything else. But the absolute BEST way of ridding an area with rodents is snakes. In fact they show up when there's abundant rodentia. However I suspect city folks would get even more unnerved by snakes than rats, but that's a guess. Heh. |

Those rats in the subway are aggressive, snakes might get killed by the rats, matter of fact, the snakes might end up becoming food for the rats! They suggest that people DON'T feed their pet snakes the mice that run around their apartment as that mice might end up the eating the snake, I have heard one example of that happening. |

Contrary to the "contrary to popular belief" saying that rats (don't know about other rodents) don't like cheese, they do, though plain cheese is not a favorite.A researcher with extensive behavioral experience with rats ran a controlled experiment (apparently to satisfy his own curiosity) in which he decided that a rat's favorite foods are scrambled eggs, mac and cheese and cob corn. I've duplicated this finding with my daughter's pet rats, except I'd reverse that order: rats will run and beg for corn every single day. Simple rule of thumb: rats have very similar physical makeup to humans, which is why they are such popular test animals. If a human likes to eat it, so does a rat. |

Trust me, if they put enough snakes or feral cats in the subway to subdue the rats, people would be begging for the rats back.Of course the cat problem could be solved by putting coyotes in the subway (which may happen anyway). Plus coyotes have dividends. Rather than spend a fortune on count-down clocks, coyotes could be trained to howl when your train is coming. Maybe even a different howl for different lines. They're smart. |

My cousin caught a mouse in a glue trap. This kind had raised edges so it isnt totally flat and it was kinda easy to fold it. I had the idea to put the trap (folded) in a plastic bag, tie the top (not too tight), and then stomping. That way no worries on the mouse somehow getting loose. A hopefully quick death. It was kinda creepy at first when I saw it was still squeeking. I had no idea how long it was stuck there, so it had to be recent. If you have those flat glue traps, they are useless. They still haven't caught anything but small bugs. There was a waterbug that got stuck on one and I thought it was dead. When I was going to fold the trap up and throw it out, the bug managed to get loose and I had to squash it with a shoe before it got away. |
