The R-44 had a one piece door cover and hanger assembly on the end of the safety chain. When it was not stored properly, but hung across the storm door, as here, you get the unsightly hole where the chain should be stored. The R-46 had a hinged door over the pocket where the safety chain was stored. If this were an R-46 you would have been able to see the open door next to the storage space for the safety chain. |

I see the difference you are talking about:R-44 R-46 But, I don't think the photo Chris posted is clear enough to tell, because below is a photo of an R-46 where you can't see the open door next to the hole: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?1709 |

If one looks at Chris' picture, about half way up the "D", I believe one can see the lip of metal on which the cover for the opening was hung. I would also submit, barring telephotography, that the distance from the cab window, to the motorman, to the rear cab wall suggests the narrow R-44 cab. |

The sign and the small door seapating the cab from passenger area tells me that it's a R-44, as I've never seen a R-46 with that sign. This is around the time (maybe a bit early) that a bunch of R-46 were sent to the D line. |

The "D" line was R-44 equipment with some other stuff mixed in. When the R-46 trucks began to crack a couple/few years later, they spread the wealth and put some on the "D". This way no particular line would suffer too much when they were pulled from service after the rush hour. |

As you can see..the 46's FULL cab door window is much larger on the 46 ,than the 44's...The 46 also has a better built car body...not that you can tell from the photo. |

They were on the A, CC, D, E, F, GG and N lines. At the time the D line equipment mainly consisted of R-40M/R-42, but R-27/30, R-32 and R-38 showed up on the D as well. |

As far as the R46s, not quite.By the time the "CC" received the R46s, the "D" went back to R44s. The R46s were not operated on the "GG" for whatever reason (at least I have not witness them). Also from what I remember they were not on the "N" because they were banned from operating on the Manhattan Bridge. The time I am speaking of is from the summer of 1980 until January, 1981. |

In fact I remember when the D line R-46 suddenly showed up in CC service, seemingly overnight and R-44 returned to the D. However, I do remember R-46s on the GG earlier around '78 give or take a year. I don't remember them being pulled from the N line, but you may be correct. I do remember when the TA played a huge game of musical car-classes around the time you mentioned when R-10s showed up on the E, F and GG lines, R27/30s, R-32 just about everywhere. I think the R-40M and R-42s were probably the only cars on the IND/BMT that didn't shipped all over. Those were some interesting years. |

You are right, the R46s definately were on the "GG" as well as the "N" around 1978-79. I don't know when the ban was placed on the R46s but I know it was in effect by 1980/81 and off by 1982.The "GG" for some reason was treated like the Queens Blvd "stepchild" during 1978-79, you would catch very few R46s on the "GG" during rush hours. However, during non-rush hours, when the TA would shorten trains, that is when the "GG" was entirely R46s. Then after '79 or '80, they just disappeared altogether. At that point, the R10s provided service during "normal hours" and the R32s provided service all other times. The R46s didn't appear on the "GG" on a regular basis until either 86 or 87. Then taken off again around 1989 once there was enough rebuilt R32s to go around. The R46s didn't comeback until 1990, and has been there every since. |

How to tell! Pre-GOH : R44 or R46? |
|

There was one sure way of telling from the head-on view. Look just below the headliights. On the Pre-GOH R-46 there was a locked door on both sides to accommodate trainline jumper cables. There were no such doors on the R-44. They were very visible on the pre-GOH R-46s. You can see where the fiberglass bonnets were repaired on the post-GOH R-46s. |
