R44 or R46?

This pic from nycsubway.org is labelled as an R46, dated to 1979. The route sign up front looks like the ones used on the R44's when new. The R46 had the modern "bullet" we're used to today, although using the old color system. Is there any other way of differentiating between the 2 car types from what's available in this shot?
