I wasn't born yet when they were retired.When I meant well designed, the trains were very good (abeit not innovative in terms of technology) when they came out. The had the good speed, comfortable, and had excellent capacity. When I meant well built, I meant they were very sturdily constructed. From what I heard they could have survived into the 1980s if they weren't replaced by the R44/46s. |

My only question is: is that a 32 or a 38 in the middle picture? She sure is a beauty - miss all those straphangers. Hah, now they sell them in the transit museum. There is/was a book on just this subject. It was called subway art - all the grafitti you wanted from the early '70's to mid '80's. All those beautiful IRT cars with pieces on them. R-32. |

By the way..most of the R12/14/15 kep the original colors for year untill some body thought it would be cool to paint them RED. You cannot imagine how UGLY those cars looked. After that ..the MTA got hold of them and painted them silver with that blue stripe. That began the long drawn out mass painting of everything to silver and blue..even the R 4-9's. |

A few were already running on the QJ out of Coney Island...but as the R40/40M cars came in..[to Jamaica Yard],the r7/9 were pushed out to ENY. Soon.. they took over service on the KK/LL and M... The LL HAD a set of R40M cars..that didn't sick around long.. The M ran a few R42...And so did the KK... The KK EVEN ran a set of 27/30's once in a while. But that was it. |

There is a sign on the southbound BG Franklin Shuttle platform advising passengers to take the Manhattan bound 2 or 3 one stop if the wish to go to the Botanical Gardens or Brooklyn Museum. Post Chrystie St. through routed on the QJ and appeared on B/D on occasion, but started their existence down there. A mainstay on the RR, QB/QT, they also held down all weekend southern division service before the R32's were delivered. |

On the LL line, I can't tell you how many times I was worried that they wouldn't have enough power to make it to Bedford Ave. But if you rode a train with no or one or two dead motors, they were rockets! The R1/9's were powerful cars. |

I operated them plenty on the D when I was a rookie. One pick, I operated the 7:57 PM from Stillwell, a put-in since it was the first D out of there after Brighton Beach service stopped running for the evening. The last M left Stillwell at 7:49 PM at that time. The equipment was supposed to be an early layup from Brighton Beach, held in Stillwell Yard till needed for that interval. Many times there was no D consist available for various reasons so an 8 car M train lay-up was substituted. Do you know how many times I went uptown with M signs on all cars except the c/r cars? I barely had enough time to change the head signs let alone the side signs in my car. Once it got uptown, they made sure it came back to get laid up and go back to M/QB service for the next morning. |

I looked at the list of booths where the agent was going on vacation, I saw Park Place and thought it was Manhattan.Actually Park Place wasn't that bad a booth. When I went to meal, I took the shuttle to Botanic Gardens (Franklin/2)for something to eat. In fact about 3 weeks later I worked the booth at Botanic Gardens what that agent went on vacation. |

Bizarrely, the Z rollsigns on the R30's contained no route information, just a centered brown Z bullet. By the end of January 1989 the R30's were gone for good on the J/Z. I started exploring the system on my own around 1975 (coincided with my bus pass from JHS109Q). But I have memories of the system as far back as the late '60s. Growing up in Queens Village I vividly remember R9s, 38s, slant 40s on the Queens Blvd lines. One time my father, who grew up in Brownsville, wanted to go to the Lower East Side via the QJ instead of the F. It was like going to another city altogether. Took the bus past 179 to the 165th St Terminal and walked to Jamaica Av. Going up to the train instead of down the steps. Riding a red R27 instead of an R9. Narrow wooden platform instead of concrete & girders. Very weird.I remember when the R44s came to the E & F. I remember R16s on the EE & GG. I remeber the R36s on the 7 in their original colors AND the 7 Line strip map on the interior. The system had a lot of variety back then. You caught it at the tail end of that era. I think many of the poster on this board have childhood memories of the system when it became sterile, 1990 & on. The way I see it today. |
