Posted by GP38/R42 Chris on Thu Jul 28 14:19:46 2005 I just found this photo in the new photo section at nycsubway.org of Metro Ave. This must've been just before the station burned.When I think of the M line of my childhood, this is the image I can see. Those R27-30's are EXACTLY the way I remember them.

Yup, it says 1979.Just two years later, this taken in 1981, it has the new station, but my old ***sniff***sniff**** friends still look the same:  Ahhh, the orange doors, the only one door opening in half the doorways, the grafittied interiors and windows, ****sniff**** The #10....that must've been rare in 1981, I don't EVER remember seeing that. I have seen MM in all different colors, etc, but never "10". |

I always though it was a sign that your line didn't mean much if these cars ran on them. Rarely did you see them outside the eastern division. I only rode them on the B and R. They were semi-regular on the R (Broadway) and a rare sight on the B. |

I also rode them on the R once or twice though. The M was probably the most colorful line. I have ridden every current 60 foot car the system had back then except the R10's. Everything from the R16 to the R42 the M had back then, although at various times it was 100% R27-30 or 100% R16, depending on the year you go back to. |

I wasn't sure at first because I thought the shuttle switched over to the N/B track closer to Prospect Park.Then I noticed the hospital in the back ground. Didn't the hospital close recently and they're turning the building into condo or something? Maybe it was at Park Place there was the enclosed toilet for employees. |

Yeah, at least "my" metropolitan still exists, and although I vaguely remember it as wood, it looks exactly like I remember it today for the most part. (Most of my memories are from the new station) there.I only rode the Jamaica El a few times before it was abanoned. Actually, 160th, the photo you posted, was my father's Aunt's station. We would occasionally get off there to go to her house. GREAT photo. |

If it wasn't a 32 or a 42, it was a 27. I used to see them at Queensborough Plaza from the other side of the platform regularly. Just like the their stainless cousins, they have been all over the system - and I do mean all ( B division ). There is not a rail in the system that they did not touch. They weren't like th r10's who were - for the most part - too proud to run on the BMT. With that said, it was rather rare to see 27's anywhere on the IND; at least, during my time.R-32. |
