Heres how the Steinway tunnel Queensbound grade problen can be resolved. Remove that timer just past the first ave crossover so trains can get a little guiddyup momentum attacking the big hill before VJ. Less strain on the motors, less juice used & a nice breeze on the Vernon-Jackson platform! |

I'm trying to remember which side the jog is on down there ... where the original tunnel didn't quite meet perfectly and so there's a jog in the tracks. Is that outbound or inbound from Manhattan? If it's outbound, that might explain that timer. |

When the 44's first came on board, they were known to leave the terminal all by themselves. Sorta like arnines if you didn't set enough handbrakes. But the 44's took POWER all by their lonesomes. Going Queens-bound, you have two GT-30 timers going down the grade, then a 20 MPH speed restriction across the switches, then one more GT-30 going up the grade. By then you're dead. |
