According to the datasheets from nycsubway.org all the IRT SMEE cars (R12 to R62) had exactly the same door opening width: 4 feet, 2 inches. I think the reason they tried to squeeze in more seats on the R62's was because of the space taken up by the across-the-car cabs.

Yes, they were used goods but they were in good condition. The Westchester Yard did a good job of keeping them that way.

I can't really say the same for the Corona Yard.

Im inclined to aggree with you but I have nothing to back it up other than their performance in the Steinway tunnel. They were dogs comming up the hill into Vernon Jackson with a rush hour load. The R-33-36s were better performers IMO. When they'd platform at VJ, you could feel the heat from the resistors amidship.

Can anyone confirm that the R62A set ran this afternoon during rush hour? I waited for it from 6 to 8:30pm at 3rd Ave - 138th Street and it never showed. It definitely was not running while I was looking for it.

I was referring to the single cars that would be inserted into a 5-car, converted R-142A set, making it a 6-car set. I think the new single car is officially an R-188.

So there will be 11-car R-188s (1 5-car set + 1 6-car set) and 11-car trains of 10 R-142As with a single R-188 inserted into one of the 5-car sets to make it a 6-car set. Hope that clears it up (probably not)

Wrong. A set of GOHed R142As is no longer an R142A set.

All the trains on the Flushing line will be R188 only. There will be no R142As at all.

That's a good question. You know, I just assumed that the 'C' car in the new six-car unit would have a number above 7899, so that the A cars could stick with the "last digit ending in 0/1/4/5" routine that we've had in the A Division for so long.

Unless one of the supervisors or managers had previous Flushing Line experience, it's doubtful anyone would have thought of that little quandary. They probably asked for ten cars with LED overlays, and that's what they got! It's very likely that many of the (6) line crews have not worked the (7) much (if at all) since they got their new signs a few years ago.

The (7) line doesn't change the front roll sign curtains at all. The side LED overlays (and PA announcements) are used to announce local or express status. It will be the same on the (6).

I'm hearing that the north roll signs will be permanently set to Pelham Bay Park for now. C/R announcements will provide the final stop as being Parkchester when necessary. And in any event, the countdown clocks will properly announce the status and destination of every arriving train.

"There is, an--uptown, local, (6) train to Parkchester, approaching the station."

I have some further info from my Pelham Line nakama:

As expected, the R-62A will be lightly used...one trip per day, in fact.

It's *scheduled* to depart Pelham Bay Park at 4:38 PM, arriving at Brooklyn Bridge - City Hall at 5:36 PM. Then it departs Brooklyn Bridge at 5:43 PM, operating as a <6> express, arriving at Pelham Bay Park at 6:41 PM. It will then be laid-up back to Westchester Yard.

If the road blows up, some put-ins don't necessarily leave the yard. It's likely that the R-62A would be withheld in such a situation. With any luck, it'll show its face today.

I've ridden the <6> with a RFW plenty of times on pre-linkage R62s and various redbirds but I never thought to bring a video camera. Not that I owned one or could have convinced my parents to buy one, admittedly. And even if I had, they'd be on VHS with the resulting poor quality. Oh well. :(

me too and if they could have been maintained esthetically I would have no problem with them. I suppose I have the issue with them because I too remember the tremendous esthetic impact they made on the #4 line (R-62). I even remember reading that the introduction of these cars started attractign more riders back. THey actually revealed the numbers in the newspaper.
The first NEW car I was old enough to remember was the R-46. But when it was delivered all shiny and new there was no comprehensive plan to deal with esthetic and vandalism issues with the rest of the rolling stock. When the R-62 was delivered, they were part of David Gunn's comprehensive plan of finally dealing with esthetics and vandalism. To this day the GOH Redbird on the #2 line is my favorite. I even purchased the Lionel set of them as a feel good post 9/11 gift to myself on 9/14. THe only R-62 (A) that look good are on the shuttle with the wraps.

Say what you want about the R62(A) they will in all likelihood last longer than the cars they replaced. While they do not have a RFW the subway is a much nicer place because of some of Gunn's efforts

While they initially had only corner cabs, they were designed so that the cabs could be made transverse by moving a bulkhead opposite the corner cab.

You are correct about the age. Some didn't last as long as their younger counterparts that would become the Redbirds. Of course I did hear these cars had much thicker steel and didn't rust as much or at all compared to the Redbirds.

Most of the R27s didn't even make 30 years of service, cause they were so messed up by then. Even if they survived any longer they would of been gone any way in 1993 looking at the events that took place with the rebuilt R30s.
