Metro-North's plan to add more service to Port Jervis line |

Posted by Gold_12TH on Fri Jun 15 14:58:22 2012 video: http://hudsonvalley.ynn.com/content/top_stories/588010/metro-north-s-plan-to-add-more-service-to-port-jervis-line/Metro-North is aggressively moving forward with plans to add a double track along the Port Jervis line. The rail runs through Orange County and it's among the fastest growing area in Metro-North territory. The Transportation Authority says by adding this extra line it will finally meet the growing demands. The Port Jervis line is on its way to getting an overdue upgrade. Metro-North gearing up to add a second track to the railroad. It'll help commuters like Annette Kieferle, who carries around a schedule every day to keep her on track for when the trains are coming. "This is it. This is your bible," said commuter Annette Kieferle. She says the departure times are so far apart right now missing a train means you'll spend hours waiting for the next one and your entire day could be pushed back. “I’ll be working late tonight just to make up the time because I missed that middle train because of a doctor’s appointment," said Kierferle. Metro-North is spending $9.4 million on a study looking into the changes. The proposed additional track would run from the Salisbury Mills area down to Sloatsburg. That stretch sees of a good amount of commuters, most of which tired of the infrequent service. "It is annoying. It’s not convenient at all. The whole point of this is that its convenience," said commuter Julian Rivera. The multi-million dollar study is expect to wrap up in about a year-and-a-half. After that, Metro-North will have to figure how to pay for the construction. It still is not sure how much it'll cost to retrofit the line. |

Problem with sidings is that the schedule goes right out the window if anything gets jacked. "It gets there when it gets there" is OK for freight, not so good for pax ... |

It would just be more expense putting it in and then ripping it out. Once the grading is done, you can throw down rail pretty quick. |

Very nice, it's a long time coming, it would be fantastic to perhaps even electrify it at some point to Harriman or get a spur off to Woodbury Outlets, it would be a major economic boom for the area and justify the service at the same time. |

The remnant of a great transportation system. Love looking at the old timetables, service to delaware river towns especially. Planned many imaginary trips from hoboken to places l ike narrowsburg and callicoon. Having canoed down the delaware numerous times, i've at least had the thrill of seeing a late night freight train winding its way up the dark river valley as we were camping, a. seriously extreme railroad lovers' moment. |

Actually the Erie didn't run more passenger trains past Suffern than they do today, it was just that most ran to Binghamton or beyond. Until the mid-1980's, there were just 2 Port Jervis commuter trains and a 3rd afternoon train to Monroe or Middletown. |

As it is, the last off peak R/T in the daytime has to terminate at Middletown at 2:55, and then has to almost immediately turn back. If it ran all the way to Port, it could clog the line between Harriman and Suffern for the first PM peak train coming up. |

Yeah, I rode that train a couple of times. I thought I could spend the layover time up in the mall, but that place was not designed for pedestrians and I did not try to cross the highway. I've heard this train terminates at Middletown because they need to get the train back to Hoboken before 6 PM. Without even considering a layover in Port Jervis, running it all the way adds an hour to the round trip. |

So did the Graham line, between VALLEY and Suffern. Conrail ripped it out when they took over the line.Ironically, by 1970 the old Main Line was reduced to one track while the Graham line remained double tracked, probably all the way up to CP Valley. This used to be called Newburgh Junction, |

Of all the off peak runs, thats the one I would bet real cash that it would be the one they might sneak a ML onto sometime...just a feeling.I will be off at that time starting next week for the summer, I might just occasionally do a little recon over that way. I can be down by Moodna in time to catch it on the viaduct if it ever does. :P |

Not necessarily. Like I said, 0049/66 gets the equipment off I believe 0052, and it turns for 0057 after it gets back to Hoboken. So far, 45/64 and 41/42 have turned up with them more often than any other train, although of course even that is an accident and indicates that the rotation got messed up somewhere. |

If you use the Harriman thru train, it's 2 hours and 14 minutes each way to NYP, 2 hours and 22 minutes to WTC. And that's the EXPRESS. If you miss that thru train, the trip on the next train from PJ is 2 hours and 31 minutes to NYP. It's the longest non-Hamptons railroad commute in the entire area. Those Wassaic and Danbury runs are also long, but at least you get a one seat ride straight to the middle of the CBD.(I neglected to include people commuting from points east of R-head on the north fork to Manhattan because I doubt there are more than a handful of them) |

It gets better than that: There people who:a) Live in places like Dingmans Ferry, Milford and Hawley Pa, and drive into PJ and THEN ride all the way in. Lou: The first train of the day leaves Port Jervis at 352AM and arrives in Hoboken at 600AM. 352 is not the early morning its the middle of the night. I give credit to the folks who do it but I wonder what kind of a home life they have. There is a point where your trip stops being a "commute" and becomes a "journey." I knew some people who commuted between GCT and Poughkeepsie, which is basically an hour and forty minute trip and then drove for another 30 or 45 minutes to reach their homes. There are some great pluses to living up north but if you want to make real money you still have to go to NYC and consequently you have very little time to appreciate what north country offers. Well, Joe Biden "commuted" from Wilmington, and he was not the only one nor did/do all the others take Acela. I was on what is now called an NEC Regional leaving DC circa 5PM overhearing two reguloars who had 20 min drives afterwards. |
