I don't agree with them. The space to build a third track is out of the way of the existing platforms, and a side platform could be constructed adjacent to the new track. Since NS wants to re-expand the capacity of the Lehigh Line further west anyhow, this would fit in with their plans.

This train is pretty quiet in Diesel mode...

Putting keeping the island platforms and adding an extra track would probably not work, especially having to operate trains through the area during construction.

I have a better suggestion: re-activate the old CNJ between Cranford and the CCL junction to provide freights with an alternative route around the section of track shared with NJT and favor the passenger trains during weekday peak times.

Unfortunately, a Union County BRT proposal would subsume that right of way.

You mean a BRT proposal that's going nowhere? There are already buses on Westfield Avenue and West Jersey Street in Elizabeth, and those same buses run on North Avenue in Roselle Park and First and Second Avenues in Roselle. Rebuilding the Elizabeth Industrial Track for buses would cost far more than rebuilding it for any kind of rail operations, and nobody's going to want to climb up to the ROW to ride a bus.

I know that, but that idea just won't die.
