Spoiled brats. |

Over at Metro-North, the M-3a rebuilds are expected to be around till at least 2020. MN squeezes as much service out of their equiptment (remember the ACMU) as $$$ & TLC will allow |

Even the M-6's are to go. The M-4 and M-6 ought to get an overhaul and go to NJT. They seem to dumb to know what to do about the aging Arrows.MN was just as ruthless as the LIRR about the M-1A's, except for 30 kept around for Yankee specials until there was no need for that. |

"The MTA capital plan is for MN to junk all their M-3A's as well"That makes absolutely no sense since they spent serious $$$ rebuilding many M3 a's back in 2009/10 & spread the word that they would be on the property for at least another 10 yrs. As for the M-4s, insiders say that they were the worst set of M series cars ever produced. That series will be the first to go on the NH side. The'll still be M-2s over there when all the M-4s are gone. As for the scrapping of the M-6, that makes no sense since they still have youth on their side. But hey, we're dealing with the MTA. One of the last things to expect from them is commom sense. |

They'll just say they are technologically obsolescent, like the PA4, (you know, like Win 3.1), and away they go. I have heard the opposite about the M-4, considered better than the M-6.All but the oldest 80 M-2's got an overhaul, made a huge difference, so they perform better than the M-4. Just overhaul the M-4, it's time. |

And anyways, if you electrify the Central, you would have to electrify east to Patchogue, so you know how much that will cost???? To a point nobody, even the US government can't afford, lol! |

Not to go too far off topic, if the MTA was able to print money, the first branch to get 3d rail would be the Port Jefferson. But back to the real world, I don't think you'll see so much as one foot of extended electrification anywhere on the LIRR, in our lifetimes anyway. Over at Metro North, the suits quietly admit that it was an expensive mistake to run 3d rail from North White Plains to Brewster North (Southeast). Over on the Hudson line where 3d rail ends around Croton-North, there's a set of bomb shoreliner coaches & Genesis locomotives maintaining 95+% on time reliability between Poughkeepsie & GCT while handeling quadruple ridership in the past 20yrs or so. Plus correct me if im wrong, every multiple unit car is considered an electric locomotive & thus subject to more rigorous FRA inspections than any shoreliner. Translation, more down time. Not to mention the Hudson line dosen't have weather related (snow) service disruptions. Point being, 3d rail is an expensive & in most cases an unneccessary "improvement" |

Over at Metro North, the suits quietly admit that it was an expensive mistake to run 3d rail from North White Plains to Brewster North (Southeast)Heh, I railfanned that line on Monday! Long ride though, It felt weird riding M7s in such a rural area, as the other areas they run (Both on LIRR & MNR) is kinda heavily populated. I never knew 3rd rail north of NWP was done by MN, I always thought it was like that since the NYC Central days or whatever railroad ran the Harlem line before MN did. |

Actually, they have prioritized Yaphank as next to get electrified some day.(Translation, more down time) Not that simple. Factor in MDBF. It's about 40K miles on a P32DM and 400K miles on an M7. Only NJT is paranoid of FRA inspections and buys electric locos, hardly a model operation and customer satisfaction down to 4.0 on a scale up to 10. Even their stinkin' bus division is about 6.1. (Point being, 3d rail is an expensive & in most cases an unneccessary "improvement" ) You will find NO ONE out of 7,000 passengers boarding at Ronkonkoma itself, or any station along the way to Carle Place, electrified between 1972 and 1987, would agree with you. Furthermore, the dual-modes and bi-level cars have completely failed to stem the ridership diversions from the Port Jeff and South Shore. |

"the dual-modes and bi-level cars..."Apples & oranges compared to the Genesis & Bomb shoreliner equiptment used on the MN Hudson line. Conversly, nobody is clamoring for 3d rail extensions over there. What they use is workin out just fine. Customer satisfaction is at an all time high, on the Hudson line anyway. |
