Are they laying welded rail on the Pemberton Industrial track, or is this for some sort of new construction?I saw a Dash 8 and an dark future EMD six axle truck running light on the bridge over the Admiral Wilson Blvd around 2:45pm yesterday and I have to wonder if it was the same pair. Today it was a pair of four axle EMDs, probably GP38s, but in both cases I didn't close enough to really identify them. |

If the crews find it impractical, then one can really call it "ugly". Railfans may be divided on the Crandall cabs, but AIUT, crews were OK with them. |

It's not that bad. As long as it properly accommodates a crew on a run, it's okay in my book. Like you said, if any part is impractical, or it adversely effects crews during a run, it is then indeed ugly. While I am more of a fan of the original design, I can live with this. Now those Crandall cabs, those were hideous!! |

Hold up, according to this site the SD40-3s are being rebuilt with either 16-645E3C or 12-710G3B prime movers. In either case it's a 3000hp engine, and if they did swap to the 710 powerplant then they've actually installed a smaller engine than the 16 cylinder 645 the SD40-2 originally used. |

If those cabs are more crashworthy than the old, I take back what I said about them being fugly ... and more tractive effort for the same fuel, that's a VERY good thing. |

The new cab is arguably about crash-resistance more than ergonomics. These sorts of geeps are taking the local freight assignments which don't need the hotel accommodations of their road freight big brothers. The specific design of the new cab is clearly about cutting costs as I am sure they could make one that both protects crew and looks nice. |

The specific aesthetics of the new cab have nothing to do with being crashworthy. CSX decided it wasn't worth their effort to make something that both performed better and looked good. |

As in my last post:Unit weight/FA=TE Generally, the Factor of Adhesion has been around 25% of unit weight. However radial trucks which allow their individual axles to steer into curves can raise this to as much as 35%. since the "Bubba Batteries"(CSX SD40-3 rebuilds) have HTC trucks rather than HTC-R or other radial designs, I'd have to say their Tractive Effort is purely LaGrange stock.
