Why do I suspect it was my old nemesis, 1575? That was a rather common problem with that car. It really thought it was an arten, right down to "Bang! Skreeeeeee!" :)

A crew member told me #1300 was the culprit. The doctors at 207th St. will have to look at it.

1575 had a habit of doing that ... sticky "magnet valve" on the electric brake. They kept saying it was fixed, and sometimes it was, most of the time not. :)

We were delayed for a few minutes outside of 5 Avenue. Some boisterous railfans.

Outside or at 5th Ave ?

If the train was outside 5th Ave station, there's usually a delay in either direction. Southbound waiting for the lineup into 47-50th St Rockefeller Ctr following an (F) train or northbound for the lineup into 5th Ave, following an (E) train.

Hot bearings were usually the result of too much tolerance on the axles themselves with oil leaking out too fast. They used to have woolies in the boxes that would try to prevent that from happening and I understand they're now using a synthetic oil that's thicker than the original, so it would either have to have a LOT of slop or perhaps it didn't get a proper "drink" before it went out.

Those cars needed a LOT of attention when they ran back in the day ...

Around the time the R32's came out, mom took us to Brighton Beach every day. I guess my hormones didn't start to rage just yet over the sexy females with SO much skin showing, so she allowed me to leave for awhile most days. One day I walked to Neptune/McDonald. A "D" train came in. I saw what looked like "an A train" in the front, but the others were "old". I waited at least 30 minutes for the train to come back but it didn't. I was completly confused for several years, didn't see that car for a long time. Finally saw it and HEARD it in operation post Chrystie St. on the GG one day on the point. She was literally smokin', but the MM let her burn!

I might add, at a later date, I realized that the smell was heat from the brake shoes and wheels since the MM was running her hard. Plus, the compressors tended to smell sometimes. Don't forget, the maintance was horrible then, with many dead motors too.

One of the great things about those old girls is that pretty much all you needed was a brake handle to beat uncooperative valves, some duct tape to stop air leaks and some newspaper and matches to heat up whatever got sticky undercar. You were pretty much expected to fix your own train back then and they were pretty easy to handle. I won't even go into used beer cans from the ground to substitute for shoe fuses when required. :)

But strikes me as a sticky valve or a clog in the pipe. I have faith that there's still some folks down there who aren't afraid of kicking a train hard to make it move like the good old days. Heh.

I actually had a weird R-10 dream the other night. They actually preserved a whole ten-car train of them and while the old timers were moaning and groaning along 6th Ave., the Thunderbirds were strutting their stuff along CPW signed as - what else? - an Abbott. In my dream, I'm at the railfan window on a s/b dash. We get to 59th and there's a bumper post up ahead where we're supposed to go. We get the bottom green lineup and blow right past the bumper. Past 50th we gather momentum and go screaming into 42nd St., stopping on a dime. The topper was, my father was still alive and was with me. I'm telling him all about that downhill sprint. Then I woke up.
