Fifth Avenue El |
|
Posted by Spider-Pig on Sat Dec 3 01:45:14 2011 At the former end of the Fifth Avenue El at Senator St. and 3rd Avenue is a branching street that allows Senator St traffic approaching 3rd from the west to take a shortcut onto 3rd north. Is this related to the old el?View Larger Map |

The ramp from the el would have blocked Senator Street west of 3rd Avenue at that point. Therefore that branch of Senator Street would have allowed traffic to bypass the ramp and reach 3rd Avenue. |

Nice shots, nice website, Mellow One.I know the legal reason trolleys stopped using the ramp (cancellation of the lease when BCRR reclaimed its lines in the BRT bankruptcy) but I'm surprised they didn't figure out a way to continue using the ramp anyway. |

I bet riders wanted a transfer to the subway, not to the el, which for the most part was a two and sometimes 3 seat ride to Park Row. |

The 5th Ave- Bay Ridge el should have been torn down in 1935, when they partially demolished Park Row and the Sands Street loop. I believe it had the least ridrship of any el, IRT or BMT! |

The section north of there provided a conduit for Culver trains, important before the completion of the Nassau St. loop. The section between 36th and 65th was usually served by a single car shuttle. |

I don't know the starting date, but it first allowed Bay Ridge el train to get to 101st Street on the surface. Later bumper blocks were installed and it became a "down-the-platform" transfer for trolley riders to the el and v.v.It stopped being used in 1919 with the BRT bankruptcy but remained in place until the el was demolished after 1940. |
