The line originally was supposed to continue along Pitkin Ave. to Springfield Blvd.I know a retired TSS who had been behind the wall and had seen the 76 St. station. He said he saw a 4 track right-of-way at the station, but no tracks were installed, and the walls were tiled for 76 St. |

This says Cross Bay Blvd. I don't now if it was going to be an express stop or if there would have been another intermediate stop between 76th St and Cross BayThere's a track map in the May 2004 ERA Bulletin (p6) that would answer your question. If I can be bothered, I'll redraw it at some point and post the results. Cross Bay Boulevard was to have had a very interesting track layout. |

Things to note: 1) The crossovers immediately east of 76th Street are very puzzling. All they do is allow a train to skip 76th or 84th, but not the other — i.e. they're almost totally superfluous. 2) Cross Bay Blvd is a very neat design. It would allow end-on terminating of full-length Fulton St Locals and short Rockaway Shuttles, but also through operation of the Local and the Rockaway Branch, with the Express eventually continuing on to 229/Linden. |

I have a question here that might merit an answer: If this line had been constructed along Pitkin Avenue, would the station at Cross Bay Boulevard have had as serious a curvature as the current path of Pitkin Avenue on either side of Cross Bay Boulevard indicates? Or would it have diverted along 133rd Avenue on its course eastward? The way that Pitkin Avenue bends at a 40° angle right at Cross Bay would indicate the likely need for gap fillers unless the station was situated wholly on either side of that road. Not sure if that would be advisable for an express/terminal type station (duly noting that it currently exists on one side of the Union Square station).thanks in advance, wayne BTW I would suspect the tile would have been in the Green family at CBB, with yellow following at 105th. |

I suspect Linden Blvd, not 133rd Av, as some maps show 105th St. extended all the way to Linden Blvd (now inside Aqueduct Racetrack). The fact that the subway line was never built might conceivably explain the partial building of Linden Blvd between 88th St and Cross Bay Blvd. The portion between Centreville St and Rockaway Blvd has, as far as I can determine, never existed. It does not appear in either the 1924 or 1951 NYC aerials.Bob |

I have actually, never seen any actual plans for the path the subway would take if it had been extended past the rumored 76 St station. If it continued along Pitkin Av, it would have to curve south to follow the path of the street. If it were to have gone straight, then it would have had to go through private property including a cemetery which might have been problematic. As was mentioned in other threads on this subject, in the early part of the century, Pitkin Av ended at approximately the Bkln/Qns border and the road that is now referred to as Pitkin Av in Qns was called South Road. Sometime in the 1930s or 1940s, Pitkin was through routed into South Road and the entire length of the thoroughfare was changed to Pitkin Av. I have been unable to locate any maps or other documentation indicating exactly when the street alignment was changed in the area but I would suspect it might have been done around the time the IND was being built there. Since the city through routed 6 Av in Manhattan between W 4 St and Canal St in order to facilitate building the IND subway it is highly possible that something similar took place with Pitkin Av in order to facilitate the proposed extension of the IND subway even though the extension was ultimately never built. |

BTW I would suspect the tile would have been in the Green family at CBB, with yellow following at 105th.Green would have been next as it would change at Cross Bay. I assume since 105th would have been an "express" station, the color would change to yellow there, and so forth. What do those two track stubs mean as they approach 105th? |

Actually Chris - CBB would have been green as Euclid is purple - but (allowing for the spectral-order mistake in the purple/blue groups) - the 85th and 76th Street stations would be Purple - as is Euclid - and, as is the case with the two-track stub terminal at 205th Street in the Bronx, 105th Street would not have been yellow; rather, it would be Green. Going toward town, it's local, local, local, EXPRESS in the color group, and the next group starts with the next local stop.wayne |
