R46 on the C

I know we all know about this- but I thought I'd share that yesterday was my first ride on a R46- C. It almost makes me like the R46s a little- sort of a new thing.

From the early 90s untill the R160s arrived, the B Division seemed so staitc- R40Ms and 42s out "east", the F & R almost exclusively, R36, etc...now, we're seeing R68s on the G, R46s on the C, and all that. I'm intrigued.

51-foot-long Redbirds were on the F and R? I thought they were all on the 6 and 7.

Temporary assignment due to air conditioning issues with the R32's. Discussed extensively in the past month, which you likely missed.

R-46's on the (C) or (CC) wasn't a new thing. They were assigned there in 1980 during that Rockwell HPT-2 truck fiasco.

I think the reasoning was that the CC was a rush hour only line so the R46 cars were assigned there to minimize the risk that the trucks would crack until they could be replaced. We saw such cars as R-10's on the E and F lines during this time. You could imagine what kind of shape those cars were in by that time.

Good shots! I think a lot of us would have rather had the Arnines brought back; unfortunately by that time they had all been scrapped.

Wow

Because the R-10's original curtain signs didn't have World Trade Center on them, (E) trains were signed up "Hudson Terminal". I saw this myself.

You're not the only one who saw them. I rode the R-10's twenty times on the "E" and six times on the "F". As for the "Hudson Terminal" signage on the cars...

R-10 #3214, Union Turnpike, IND Queens Boulevard Line (1980).

R-10 #3271, Chambers Street/World Trade Center, IND 8th Avenue Line (1980).

Wayne rode on a rocket of an R-10 Fred in early 1981. He says it screamed along Broadway and Queens Blvd. and positively went into jet propulsion mode along Hillside Ave.
