R42 Pantograph Question

Posted by Dj Hammers on Sun Aug 7 19:33:22 2011

I noticed a weird oddity among the R42 fleet. Some cars have traditional pantograph gates on the front of the car while others have "bologna" springs similar to those on the R46s.

Is there a reason for why some have pantographs vs. springs?

For those who don't understand what I am talking about, here are examples of the two variations:
With Pantograph Gates
With Springs

Almost seems like the Pantograph gates might have been donated from R27-30 etc. or if the cars were SMS at 2 different locations, each shop did their own thing.

The pantograph gates were supposedly salvaged from scrapped "arnines".

I dunno ... looked at the photo from DJ and it doesn't work for me. I spent a lot of time between those puppies and I remember the top and bottoms being rather straight with the hand/knee grab welded on the top. So went and looked and I still don't buy it ... Maybe the bars, but definitely not the "swingy parts" ... the scissors part maybe ...

Actually, the non pantograph gates are not bologna springs but safety chains similar to those that are hung between the cars by the end doors.

Obviously, the entire "arnine" pantograpg gate could not have been used. The scissors part of the gate and the long verticle plate with the rounded ends should be the original "arnine" pantograph gate.

The two horizontal arms are not original, the top one more angular to compensate for the low R-40/42 windshield and route sign windows.

I seen these gates in person and it looks like the new arms were added to the pantograph gate. They look welded. It doesn't look original. I wouldn't be surpised if Coney Island or 207th St shops thought of a way to retrofit the R-40/42s with these gates, saving money.

The best evidence of this is to find any photos of piled up "arnines" being scrapped and see if their pantograph gates are missing.

Ahh...that's it !

Remember that the R42 as delivered had NO pantograph gates. That means the gates you see on the cars were all added afterward, and retired subway cars seem to be a logical source for donors.

SIC is scary! "Once your employees know their online activities are being tracked, they are more likely to adhere to a social media policy". Creepy!

In order to maintain employment these days, you have to consent to letting a third-party agency watch all of your social networking activity, and report that back to your employer? I can understand why businesses would want this, but it's STILL creepy...
