Lagos to run smoothly on rails soon |
|
Posted by SelkirkTMO on Sun May 22 00:51:33 2011 Yep ... even Nigeria is building rail now, the third world doing what America can't. :(Lagos to run smoothly on rails soon Tease: LAGOS, Nigeria – A giant billboard towers over a stretch of road in central Lagos, offering a tantalizing vision of the future: a sleek, modern station from which Lagosians will be whisked efficiently around the city on a light rail transit line. But beyond the billboard is the current reality of traffic in one of the world’s fastest-growing cities: a bumper-to-bumper crawl of cars, trucks, and rickety minibus taxis known as "danfos." The dusty construction site for the new transit line is a jumble of motorbikes, hawkers and pedestrians who ignore warning signs and weave through the concrete foundation pillars. Translating the vision into reality will be no easy feat. But the Canadian company that is handling the logistics of the innovative project is convinced that Lagos’s groundbreaking foray into urban light rail transit will become a model for booming African cities of the future. Rail lines like the one being built in Lagos can help boost productivity, economic development and quality of life in a rapidly urbanizing Africa, said Peter Kieran, president of CPCS Transcom Ltd. The light rail line will be one of the first in sub-Saharan Africa, and will have "demonstration impact" for other African cities, he said. "They’ll say, 'we can do this as well. We can have this too.'" --- Read and see more above ... |

Thanks for sharing.I look forward to seeing how this project progresses. And once operations begin, I will look forward to the kinds of impacts it will have on the day-to-day lives of Lagos residents and Lagos' urban form (hopefully positive, but something that won't be quantifiable until several years after opening). Hopefully it can become a successful example of high capacity transit for the many burgeoning cities in developing world. But I fear the amount of corruption in Nigeria might have a negative effect. Let's hope this is one area where Nigeria's corruption will not become too pervasive. Here is a map of the planned rail network: Taken from a file on the LRMT website |

I thought it might be more interesting that the turtle races. :)Canada doesn't do corruption well, so should be interesting indeed. Meanwhile, our elected geniuses are ... well ... :( |

The current governor of Lagos state is about the most corruption free governor in recent Nigerian history -- so there is some room for hope.On the cynical side, though, it isn't hard to imagine that scene of incomplete construction pillars staying unfinished for the next 10 years... |

They're going to be using Toronto's H6 and possibly H5 subway cars initially, as we're retiring all our Hawker-Siddeley cars within the next couple of years. The Lagos State Governor was on property recently to inspect the cars.News Article Here |

Sounds like Ontario is going to have to up their antiterror funding once Nigeria discovers the fine electrical work that is Hawker-Siddeley. How many of YOURS burned? :) |

None of our revenue trains as far as I know.. I remember a garbage train once went up in flames, and the Christie Station fire many years ago with a train of H1's, but that was caused by vandals.I've had an H5 motor blow and create a lot of smoke... but then I've had that happen on a T1 too so it isn't only Hawkers :-) |
