R-32 on the A |
|
Posted by UTC Bus Roster on Sat Mar 26 04:37:20 2011 Due to an equipment shortage, a train of R-32 cars was operated on the A line yesterday morning. It made the 0603 from 207 St. to Lefferts Blvd., and the 0732 from Lefferts Blvd. to 207 St., where it was promptly laid up to 207 St. Yard. The consist (from the south) was: 3488/89, 3405/04, 3778/79, 3644/21, 3728/29. |

They had to sectionalize the train and flag it one way to get it to the yard.It can safely be said that the train in question was not repaired by the AM rush, hence the need for the R32 set to make service. |

I guess they try to have some mercy on the crews, although about a week-and-a-half ago there was an R32 set running on the A one evening in Leffets service. By sending it out on that interval they are able to run it for just one trip and get rid of it.Last Wednesday around 5 PM, there was a delay on the A to Far Rock and Euclid rerouted a C out there. Screwed the crew. |

HVAC can be fixed.(Budd Heritage cars live on at Amtrak and VIA Rail - Pullman Standards do not) Given the 35 years of age of the R46, time to pull them off full time service. Swap Pitkin's allotment with as many R68's at CIY, and run the R46's on the B train. Then assign the G to CIY and leave it with its R46's. They should also run R46's on several Kings Hwy F's that do 1 or 2 trips a day, and displace those R160's to the R. Try to run R160's on the overnite R shuttle, so the R46 can sleep even more. |

At least if it's their get away trip they can make $$$ since there is no such thing as extra service anymore. You go anywhere they reroute you.In their case it was their first half. They got a measly no lunch (blood $$), and were in and out all night trying to catch up, with other crews jumping ahead since for awhile they weren't where they were supposed to be. |

Then you have full-length trains on the C, which is a waste of resources, at least for those 8 train sets, unless you run 6 car "C" with R46's 2 car sets, of which there are 12 or 14. But then you are under-serving it and I don't think there are car-stop markers and conductor boards for 6 car 75-footers. |

This is like what happened when the R27's hit the Brighton local in 1960. A friend tells me who lived through it that an R27 local was faster than a Express with Standars, though I don't know why he didn't see Triplexes. |

Well, you've got four 100-hp motors per car on the R-27s, which weighed around 40 tons apiece. OTOH the BMT standards had two 140-hp motors per car and weighed 47-49 tons apiece. I didn't think the standards were all that sluggish when I rode them on the Larry from 1967 to 1969. |

The R-32s were associated with your train for many years. In fact, I still associate them with the Norton (that's what I call the N). My very first subway ride was on a Sea Beach Express of shiny new R-32s on July 21, 1965. Truth be told, I don't actually remember seeing an N marking, but I do remember the green backlit "57th St." side signs, which confirmed it was an N. Back then, the West End Express or the the T, ran to Astoria on weekdays when it operated. |

There may have been a Triplex train or two still running over there, but chances are the ones that were still around were on the West End. That's where they ended their careers. The N marking came into being with the arrival of the R-27s in 1960. They were initially assigned to the Brighton local, but once they had arrived in sufficient numbers, they held down all weekend service on the Southern Division, so you'd see N, QB, RR, T and TT trains on Saturdays and Sundays. I hear that the most frequently asked question was, "What's a QB/N/RR/T/TT?" |

I suppose if the R16's were to ever run on pre-Chrystie Southern Division, they would have had to display numeric signs. I do not know if their roll signs had 1 thru 9 on them. I know that had at least A, 10, 13 thru 16, though north and south destination sings for much of the "B" division. I have seen pictures of them with "95th St, Frt Hmltn".The R11/34 did run on the West End and Brighton at one time or another as the 3 and 1. |
