Unless it was in one of the other dumpsters and they used the contents to fill an abandoned tunnel. ;)

Very true. If you only saw the huge collection of old photographs, primarily 8x10 size, dating from before the opening of the first subway to the mid-1940s, including hundreds on the Staten Island Rapid Transit 1930s rehabilitation project (nothing on 76th Street, sorry) that were thrown out by the NYCTA many years ago, you'd cry. Fortunately, someone notified me and we went there with a van quickly and took them in off of the street before the Sanitation Department got to them. They are now well-preserved. Otherwise......

I am glad you were able to save the pics and documents. That is history and unfortunately many things from years gone by are no longer in existence. So all we have left is photo's or maybe a part of the el. I use to ride the Myrtle ave el when it was still up and running. but at least there are photo's available to at least look at and remember back when. Thank you Joe I am glad you saved some of our history. by the way didnt think there would be a lucky pic behind those concrete walls

You rescued history, imagine what might have been if you weren't notified.

I got the impression that Pacific St might also have had a similar entrance in the median.

Pacific Street did have a headhouse on the median strip. It was still there about two years ago though it was no longer in use. I remember thinking at the time that it would have been a suicide mission trying to cross 4 Avenue to get to the train.

I've been upstairs at Pacific street over the years and I never remember a headhouse in the median and I'm going back to when I started working for the TA in 1966.

With the resulting answer being that there are plenty of abandoned underground areas in the transit system that have been sealed off over the years.

Which one of these do you think is the longest? The Polo Grounds Shuttle tunnels, perhaps?
