The Median was there long before the subway, it shows up even in the 1926 photos. That is the conduit (No Conduit Ave) for the Aqueduct that used to run through there. |

But seems pretty obvious that the ROW was for real, at least on the surface and the city back in those days, would have to have a more passable reason than "this street to nowhere needs straightening, let's get some guys out there. Plenty of other places where "your tax dollars at work" would have been more obvious to more people. :) |

The boat ride is still there, though it's closed for two months in late winter for them to drain it, clean out the crap (it's only three feet deep), fix the dam at the end and fix the boats. It's a LOT shorter a ride than it used to be owing to a collapse due to mining at that end of the cavern by a Limestone company that owns the other end, but it's still closed up at least. The quake merely knocked a lot of rock off the roof down towards the "pipe organ" formation, and portions of that rock now on the ground allowed them to rework the walkaway path leading up to it. Extensive stabilization of the roof up there also had to be done to ensure nothing else falls in the future. It was one of those rare 4.5'ish quakes. Normally earthquakes around here are 3.0 or less ... |

Of course, it's usually in places where there is a jog or something, and it's still relatively sparsely populated (at the time of the realignment). And of course, Pitkin/76th was pretty sparse right into the 50's. |

It's a place we go to often when it's in the upper 90's with humidity to match. The guides are always amused by our complete disinterest in "the show" but once we explain that we're along for the ride SOLELY for the temperature, they leave us alone. :)Did you ever try blowing up any of those tubes? Where the HELL did the time go.Anyway, I said the same thing I just did, I am about half way down the thread with my first post on it: GP38 BMTFan Email User Profile 4/02/2002 09:15:04 RE: Joe Brennan on the 76th Street IND station IP: Logged Message: Alright this is a cute joke. It had me for a while too. Three clues after rereading it, and the thread: -Fluorescent lighting in the station in 1948.....yeah right. -Davidg quotes "catch it while you can" - sounds like you were in on it when you posted it! -Sinkholes, a man coming screaming out of his house, and solid ground where there used to be stairs....none of this ludicrously is written like that in any of the real accounts of abandoned stations...... It's a great joke though. He must be rolling in laughter..... Riding between cars is prohibited.....Except for on the R40 Slants |
