Indeed it will. I've seen some mighty impressive pics from those things.

A couple of years ago, a local earthquake resulted in a partial collapse at Howe Caverns, a nearby tourist trap. Before anyone went down to check out the damage, they were using one of those things to look a couple of hundred feet down. You could make out pebbles in the pics.

The question then becomes, how was the tunnel from Broadway Junction to Euclid Avenue built. Was it bored or was it built via cut and cover? There is little reason to believe that the tunnel south of Euclid Ave. would have been built any differently. There, then should be some record, photographic or otherwise, of Pitkin Ave being torn up east of Grant Ave to accommodate the building of the 76th St. Station.

This is why I posted a link to the Joseph Brennan USNET post of 03 31 2002 that started it all.

He did well with the photo though. At quick glance, you can't tell that's an island platform station, the wall could be cropped out on the left, and you couldn't see the tracks on the side.
It took a while, but someone found the original photo at 7th Ave which he used.

Yes. But it is not the same thing as 76th St. If 76th St was built, it wasn't built as a "provision" to future expansion, it was being built BECAUSE they were still continuing at that time. SOuth 4th was always a provision for the future, and they built exactly what they wanted to build.

In fact there was an article about 76th Street in a New York Division Electric Railroaders Association Bulletin.

To clarify the point being made here: The portion of South 4 Street above the existing in-use subway could have been built without staircases to the street, because presumably those staircases will be located in the currently unbuilt portions if and when they are constructed. That is certainly the way I would have done it. 76 Street is different because there would be no reason to leave the staircases for last in what was presumably intended to be complete construction for use in the near future. However-- no one really seems to know the complete history of the station or the precise intentions of its designers and builders, so perhaps no more than a shell without entrances was built for possible use in the then-distant future. All we know for sure is that provisions (switches, signals, tracks, model board) were clearly left for an extension at least as far as 76 St.

Regardless of of where or when controversy started. It is my belief that the station does not existed. If it did there would be several people still alive that would remember its construction. There would be records of its construction in the archives of various city and state agencies.

"If you could prove a tunnel, then it's very likely the shell is there in that tunnel, as that tunnel would have been built with that station in the plans.

If we could prove a tunnel, perhaps it would be worth digging to get the necessary photographs. If the radar sled shows nothing at all, then why bother digging?
