To clarify the point being made here: The portion of South 4 Street above the existing in-use subway could have been built without staircases to the street, because presumably those staircases will be located in the currently unbuilt portions if and when they are constructed. That is certainly the way I would have done it. 76 Street is different because there would be no reason to leave the staircases for last in what was presumably intended to be complete construction for use in the near future. However-- no one really seems to know the complete history of the station or the precise intentions of its designers and builders, so perhaps no more than a shell without entrances was built for possible use in the then-distant future. All we know for sure is that provisions (switches, signals, tracks, model board) were clearly left for an extension at least as far as 76 St. |
