The station is clearly not open for service. First off, there are no route signs. Initially, the line was to be served by the G and N, not the E. Secondly, those station name signs were changed before the station opened to the public. That large flag leads me to believe this pic was taken well before the line opened, either during of just after some sort of public event, perhaps to commemorate the end of construction. IIRC the line was actually finished by 1984, at least on the upper level. |

I actually do recall seeing this signage a couple of times over the years when using the station. Only a handful, myabe 1 or 2 remained/remain. The fact that: 1)LIRR is mentioned and 2) the sign was illuminated by the backlight (they loved doing that in circa-'80's subway work apparently, look at 179th/Jamaica's turnstile area from this same photo collection, which looks similar to the renovation 137th/City College received in it's turnstile area) caught my eye.If the line was completed by 1984, then why did it take all the way into the tail end of 1988 for trains before trains started running through it? BTW, I'm loving these new set of photos. For years now I've been clamoring to see photos on the circa-'80's subway. |

The connection to the el wasn't started until the summer of 85, and trains were using it as early as September '87. Maybe they wanted to wait until they had enough GOH cars to avoid having to run the crappy cars on it. Imagine R16's on the lower level.....it would be embarassing. |

Someone must have changed his mind about the name of the station, because on opening day and thereafter, all those backlit signs were covered over with the current standard black metal signs that say only "Sutphin Boulevard" and don't mention the LIRR. You used to be able to look up into the lights and see the covered-over original signs.At Jamaica-Van Wyck, even the conductor boards were backlit and built into the lights, but they've long since been covered over with standard boards. What was new (and stupid) at those stations was the station name signs installed at platform edge along with the route signs and exit signs. It makes the platform edge way too busy. An original design drawing for Jamaica-Van Wyck shows the station name signs installed on posts between the seats, like at Junction Blvd(7). Also wrong was the station name signs in half-size font. Normally the main station name is full size, with secondary name in half size. Even Roosevelt Island originally had half-size-font station signs, but this has been corrected. (I think Union Turnpike still has the incorrect half-size-font station name signs.) |

The problem in Jamaica is the terrain. Jamaica sits on some of the lowest land on Long Island, which means it's a natural place for water to collect. In fact, during the Battle of Long Island, the British forces attempted to outflank the Continental Army in Brooklyn Heights by going through the Jamaica pass, which was the only undefended way to get over the Heights. |

When it opened, it was never called "Jamaica LIRR Station - Sutphin Blvd. It was always called "Sutphin Blvd - Archer Ave" until they incomprehensibly slapped on the "JFK" label.Jamaica Center is a different story. For the first year or so it was called "Jamaica Center - Parsons Blvd". Around 1990 it was changed to "Parsons/Archer". |

A somewhat recent photo on nycsubway.org's collection of Sutphin photos confirms that some of those original "Jamaica LIRR Station" signs still exist, or at least are concealed under recent signs at the station. They always caught my eye whenever I saw them in years past.....think it was the neato backlighting. |
