Someone must have changed his mind about the name of the station, because on opening day and thereafter, all those backlit signs were covered over with the current standard black metal signs that say only "Sutphin Boulevard" and don't mention the LIRR. You used to be able to look up into the lights and see the covered-over original signs. At Jamaica-Van Wyck, even the conductor boards were backlit and built into the lights, but they've long since been covered over with standard boards. What was new (and stupid) at those stations was the station name signs installed at platform edge along with the route signs and exit signs. It makes the platform edge way too busy. An original design drawing for Jamaica-Van Wyck shows the station name signs installed on posts between the seats, like at Junction Blvd(7). Also wrong was the station name signs in half-size font. Normally the main station name is full size, with secondary name in half size. Even Roosevelt Island originally had half-size-font station signs, but this has been corrected. (I think Union Turnpike still has the incorrect half-size-font station name signs.) |
