Of course, info was hard to find, no www!

I was out there one day when it was supposed to run on the D, but it neve showed up. I was waiting for it at Atlantic Ave. for 4 hours!

I forget the year but I briefly rode it in Philly on The Broad St. subway. IIRC it was around 1980'ish. I was up front and saw the control cab.

I just looked it up. So it was 1975. My apologies.
Must have had a baby sitter for my 2 yr.son.

The operational demonstration and evaluation phase of the SOAC program started when the cars arrived in New York City on April 18, 1974, and ended with the completion of the Philadelphia demonstration on April 30, 1975. Pertinent statistics from the 5-city operation are given in Table I.

Not quite an R-44 per se, but definitely the R-44 design with extensive enhancements some of which were used on the R-46.

The interiors of the 2 cars in the unit were different. One car as was shown in the NYCsubway.org photo was arranged with carpets and padded seats arranged for commuter rail operation. The other was arranged like an R-44 style rapid transit cars. The body design was based on the R-44 with certain enhancements and could be pantograph equipped which they were, for use in Cleveland and Chicago. The idea was to produce a standard car body design which could be cheaply produced and used by most transit systems and commuter railroads in the US. Of course, certain transit systems like Chicago and the Boston Blue Line couldn't use the car design in its entirety due to clearance considerations and when it was used in Chicago, it was restricted to the Skokie Swift which had the platforms at Dempster and a portion of the platform at Howard modified to clear it.
