One car as was shown in the NYCsubway.org photo was arranged with carpets and padded seats arranged for commuter rail operation. The other was arranged like an R-44 style rapid transit cars. The body design was based on the R-44 with certain enhancements and could be pantograph equipped which they were, for use in Cleveland and Chicago. The idea was to produce a standard car body design which could be cheaply produced and used by most transit systems and commuter railroads in the US. Of course, certain transit systems like Chicago and the Boston Blue Line couldn't use the car design in its entirety due to clearance considerations and when it was used in Chicago, it was restricted to the Skokie Swift which had the platforms at Dempster and a portion of the platform at Howard modified to clear it. |
