The wastefulness of the LIRR, the Far Rock Shabbos train...

Posted by aaron on Sun Nov 28 15:10:15 2010

...last year the LIRR started a "Shabbos" train that runs on Fridays only from Jamaica to Far Rockaway when the clocks are set back and Observant Jews need to be home before sundown. The train leaves Jamaica at 15:04.

This train was relevant last year as the regular trains left NYP and Atlantic terminal around 14:05 and 15:05. Over the past year, the Far Rockaway trains were retimed to leave around 14:30. So, now, the "Shabbos" train leaves Jamaica 6 minutes after the regular train. To make matters worse, it doesn't make Locust Manor, Laurleton or Rosedale, so it sits behind the regular train all the way to Far Rockaway.

Interestingly, the schedule has funny timing, for example, it shows a 9 minute headway between Lawrence and Inwood, you could walk it in about that time.

Given the current scheduling, the train is a waste.

Though Friday was a quasi-holiday, not surprisingly most people got on the regular train at Jamaica and hardly anyone waited for the "Shabbos" train.

With fares scheduled to go up again at the beginning of the year, the LIRR should figure things like this out a little better.

Maybe the next schedule change will reflect end of track work elsewhere, and the domino effects on Far Rock schedule will put them back to the traditional xx:10.

They also restored one of the half-hourly Port Wash trains, and act like they gave us something.

There are a lot of Jewish people on the lower part of the Oyster Bay branch. Nothing for them. An MU to East Williston would have been nice if nothing else.

I know some these Jewish people and they are more secular than the Orthodox ones. This train and the Port Washington train are for the ultra-orthodox in Cedarhurst (Far Rock branch) and Great Neck (PW branch). Though running it 9 minutes after the regular is a complete and utter waste of resources (a train, a crew and money to run it)

They don't charge extra fare? A special train like that shouldn't be regular fare.

Well, I think Olog is right on this one tho. If they are running the train for a specific group or reason, then they should charge an extra fee. Why should all of us pay to subsidize a service used by a specific group? There would be nothing discriminatory about it.

Again. Orthodox Jews are not permitted to travel on the Sabbath, so they must be home in time. Hence the extra train to these destinations. Muslims can travel on Ramadan and Christians can travel and Easter and Christmas so they don't need extra trains. You are comparing apples and oranges.

The LIRR is doing a service for observant Jews. Its a nice gesture but I agree that it should be eliminated if its too costly.

Define "extra capacity", especially when it comes to the Main Line. There is no direct route from Far Rockaway to Penn Station that avoids the Main Line or Babylon Branch. The only way to take advantage of "extra capacity" is to make the sabbath trains into shuttles. (Of course, if Christians finally recognized that they should be observing the seventh-day Sabbath and that observing Sunday is completely unbiblical, that might help matters . . .)

Far Rockaway trains do not use the Babylon Branch at all. They share tracks with the Long Beach Branch west of Valley Interlocking in Valley Stream (since 1933-1950's on the current elevated structure and long before that on the ground). The Far Rockaway line (most of it) and the Babylon line which parallels it at Valley Stream at one time were actually owned by different companies. At the hour the extra train runs there should be adequate capacity for it. During rush hour more trains use the Jamaica-NYP trackage and the tracks from Jamaica to Valley Stream. Of course before 1950 the extra train could have been routed over the Rockaway Beach Branch and Jamaica Bay trestle and avoided much of the main line altogether although I don't think that any running time would have been saved. If anything the running time to those stations via the Main Line and Valley Stream was probably shorter. I wasn't around then so I don't know for sure.

In English, the word for sea is "yam," spelled with an A. "Yom" means "day."
