Far Rockaway trains do not use the Babylon Branch at all. They share tracks with the Long Beach Branch west of Valley Interlocking in Valley Stream (since 1933-1950's on the current elevated structure and long before that on the ground). The Far Rockaway line (most of it) and the Babylon line which parallels it at Valley Stream at one time were actually owned by different companies. At the hour the extra train runs there should be adequate capacity for it. During rush hour more trains use the Jamaica-NYP trackage and the tracks from Jamaica to Valley Stream. Of course before 1950 the extra train could have been routed over the Rockaway Beach Branch and Jamaica Bay trestle and avoided much of the main line altogether although I don't think that any running time would have been saved. If anything the running time to those stations via the Main Line and Valley Stream was probably shorter. I wasn't around then so I don't know for sure. |
