I don't know that we can tell the difference between SteinwayLo-V and mainline Lo-V cars from the front. But the Gibbs Hi-V cars have a dead give-away in the MUDC door controls. The Hi-Vs with the larger boxes. |

The second car from the left in the front lineup appears to have a split storm door window. It also has a double panel on the storm door instead of a single one beneath the window. The door panels would indicate either a Headley motor which was rare on Pelham or one of the first 12 Steinways which were called "boilers" and had that type of storm door paneling. I recall some time in the mid 1950s seeing a N/B train at 149/Gr Conc on which the south motor had a similar split window but I have not been able to find out what it was and this car looks a lot like it. Does anyone out there know? |

It doesn't look like there are any MUDC Gibbs cars in the mix since the MUDC Gibbs cars had a standard style sliding storm door with a single panel under the window like a Lo-V rather than the double panel like the Headleys had. It appears that other than the R-17s, there are only Gibbs, World's Fairs and standard bodied Lo-Vs or Steinways. It's hard to tell from the photo angle if the standard bodies cars are Steinways or Lo-Vs since Pelham operated some trains of standard Lo-Vs as well as Steinways. A closer view could show which was which since when the Steinways came to the mainline the standard bodies ones received a red line under the number to alert local supervision which cars were the Steinways. |

If it is not a MUDC Gibbs car, then it has manual door levers for the corner doors. But I don't see those big levers on any of the cars. IIRC most of the Hi-V fleet was converted to MUDC except for the 50 deckroof cars, and some of the 1904 (Gibbs) cars. |

Upon further examination, those Hi-V cars have split front door windows and the manual door control boxes with the concealed lever for the corner doors and valve for the center doors. That would make them non-MUDC Gibbs cars |

Hi-Vs did not receive battery running lamps and only one standard body Lo-V received seal beams. The only prewar IRT cars that received seal beams were the 1939 World's Fair cars. The R-17s as delivered also did not have seal beams but had them retrofitted like the R-21s. The R-22s were the first NYCTS cars to come factory equipped with seal beams. |
